Chapter 2 - THE FALL OF A LEGENDAs military police swarmed the mess hall to escort Reed away, he didn't look at his fellow SEALs. He looked at me, his eyes wide with a sudden, dawning horror. He realized now that my observation about his ligament injury and his swollen knuckles hadn't been a lucky guess—it had been an evaluation.

"I'll have your head for this, Vance!" he roared as he was dragged away.
I didn't answer. I simply stood there, ignoring the pain, while the Admiral personally escorted me to the medical bay.

"Why didn't you put him down, Elena?" the Admiral asked once we were behind closed doors. "You’ve trained with the best hand-to-hand instructors in the country. You could have broken his wrist before he even finished his swing."
"Because he needed to show his true colors in front of the witnesses," I said, wincing as the corpsman began checking my ribs. "If I had retaliated, it would have been a 'scuffle.' Because I took the hit, it became a court-martial."
