Chapter 1 - The First Breath

The silence in the room suddenly felt heavy, charged with a sudden, suffocating electricity.

I stared down at the hand resting against the pristine white sheet. The index finger, which had remained entirely lifeless since the tragic accident nine months ago, twitched again. A slow, agonizing millimeter to the right.

My breath caught in my throat. I wanted to scream, to run to the mahogany door and yell for the private nurse, for Vivian, for anyone who could validate that I wasn't losing my mind. But my feet were glued to the floor.

Slowly, painfully, Ethan’s heavy eyelids fluttered.

Long, dark lashes parted, revealing eyes that had been locked away in darkness for nearly a year. They weren't glazed or vacant as I had feared. They were sharp, piercing, and terrifyingly lucid. A stunning, stormy gray that cut straight through the dimming evening light.

He didn't blink. He didn't flinch. His eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Then came his voice.

It was raspy, dry as cracked earth, and barely a breath escaping his lips, but the words hit me like physical blows:

"Don't trust Jason."

The monitor beside the bed emitted a sudden, sharp spike in rhythm. Beep. Beep. Beep. The flat, monotonous tone of the past hour was replaced by a frantic, living pulse.

"Ethan?" My voice trembled, barely louder than a whisper. "Can you... can you hear me?"

His gaze shifted slightly, acknowledging my words, but before he could speak again, the heavy oak door clicked open.

A sharp gasp pierced the room.

It was Nurse Evelyn. She dropped the tray of evening medications she was holding, glass shattering against the polished hardwood floor, liquid splashing across our shoes.

"Oh, my God," she breathed, her hands flying to her mouth. Her eyes darted from Ethan's wide-open, staring eyes back to my terrified face. "Mr. Thornton..."

Without another word, she spun on her heel and bolted down the hallway, her frantic shouts echoing through the grand mansion. "Dr. Vance! Dr. Vance, get up here right now! Mr. Thornton is awake!"

I turned back to the bed, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. But the moment the door slammed open with approaching footsteps, Ethan’s eyes closed.

Just like that.

The frantic rhythm on the monitor slowed back down. His breathing evened out. His body went completely slack, as if the brief, terrifying moment of consciousness had drained every drop of life he had left.

When Dr. Vance burst into the room followed closely by Vivian and Jason, they found me standing frozen beside the bed, staring at a man who looked once more like a sleeping corpse.

Jason was the first to speak, a smirk playing at the corners of his mouth despite the chaos.

"Well, well," Jason drawled, stepping past the frantic doctor. "Looks like our new bride couldn't even let the groom rest for a single night without scaring him half to death."

Vivian glared at me, her cane tapping sharply against the floor. "Get her out of here," she commanded coldly. "She's interfered enough."

As two security guards grabbed my arms to drag me away, I looked back at Ethan's motionless face. Only I knew the truth.

He was awake. And someone in this house was trying to kill him.
