Chapter 4 - A Dangerous Ally

They locked me in the East Sitting Room for hours.
By the time the morning sun began to paint the Hudson River in shades of bruised gold and crimson, the heavy iron-reinforced door finally clicked open.
It wasn't a security guard who walked in. It was Vivian Thornton.
She looked immaculate, dressed in a tailored charcoal St. John suit, her silver hair pulled back into a severe bun. She didn't look like a grieving grandmother; she looked like an empress inspecting a conquered province.
She walked slowly to the velvet armchair opposite me, sat down, and folded her hands over her cane.
"You make quite a mess, Claire," Vivian said calmly, her voice devoid of any warmth. "Within twenty-four hours of stepping foot in this house, you’ve accused my grandson of murder and disrupted medical protocols."
"Your grandson is a criminal," I spat back, standing up from the sofa, my voice shaking with fury. "And Evelyn is trying to murder Ethan right in front of us! You know about this, don't you? You and Jason are working together to steal his empire!"
Vivian didn't flinch. She didn't even blink. Instead, a chilling, bitter smile touched her lips.
"Steal? My dear girl, the Thornton empire was built on blood, betrayal, and ruthlessness. Jason lacks the stomach for it, and Evelyn is a hired tool. But you..." Vivian’s sharp eyes scanned me up and down. "You surprise me. I expected a meek little pawn from Yonkers who would sign papers, keep her mouth shut, and cash her father's debt-relief checks."
"I am not a pawn," I whispered fiercely.
"Are you sure about that?" Vivian leaned forward. "Your father traded you for pocket change, Claire. To Jason, you're a nuisance to be disposed of. But to me..." She paused, lowering her voice. "...you might just be the weapon I've been waiting for."
I stared at her, stunned. "What are you talking about?"
"Jason thinks he controls the board," Vivian said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous, hidden fire. "He thinks because Ethan is incapacitated, he can dismantle the trust, liquidate the assets, and push me out of the company. He’s ambitious, but he’s stupid. He leaves a trail."
"And you're just going to let him?"
"I am an old woman," Vivian said softly, though there was steel beneath her words. "I cannot fight my own blood openly without destroying the Thornton name. But you... you have nothing to lose. And Ethan—if he truly woke up—needs someone on the outside who isn't bought and paid for."
She reached into her handbag and slid a heavy, old-fashioned brass key across the mahogany table.

"What is this?" I asked, looking down at it.
"The key to the private archives in the basement," Vivian said quietly. "Inside, you will find the original security footage from the day of Ethan’s 'accident,' along with the financial audit Jason tried to destroy. If you want to save your husband—and if you want to survive this house—find the truth. But trust no one. Not even me."
