Chapter 3 - The Devil in White

"Stop!" I screamed, lunging forward with a force I didn't know I possessed.

I slammed my body against Nurse Evelyn, knocking the syringe out of her hand. It clattered against the floor, a clear liquid spilling across the tiles.

Evelyn stumbled back, her professional, placid facade shattering instantly into a mask of pure venom.

"You stupid little fool!" she hissed, her voice losing all its hospital-grade sweetness. "You have no idea what you're interfering with!"

"You're poisoning him!" I shouted back, my hands trembling as I checked Ethan’s face. His eyes were closed, his breathing dangerously shallow. "Jason sent you, didn't he? You're keeping him in this coma!"

Evelyn sneezed a cruel, mocking laugh as she bent down to retrieve the empty plastic casing of the syringe.

"Jason is a businessman," she said coldly, straightening up and adjusting her white cap. "He wants what’s his. And the old woman—Vivian—she knows. Everyone in this house knows that a conscious Ethan is a dangerous Ethan. The accident wasn't a fall, Mrs. Thornton. He was pushed. And if he wakes up to tell the tale, neither of you will survive the week."

My blood turned to ice water. Pushed.

Before I could process the confession, Evelyn lunged toward the door. "Guard!" she screamed into the hallway. "Security! The new bride is having a psychotic episode in Mr. Thornton's room!"

Heavy boots thudded down the hallway.

"No, wait—!" I tried to block the door, but two massive security guards shoved past me, pinning my arms behind my back.

"Get her out of here," Evelyn ordered, her eyes flashing with triumphant malice. "Take her to the East Sitting Room and lock the door from the outside. If she so much as steps foot near this wing again, Mr. Jason will deal with her personally."

They dragged me kicking and screaming down the corridor. As I was hauled away, I looked back one last time at Ethan’s bed.

In the dim moonlight, I could have sworn his fingers twitched again.
