Chapter 6 - Point Blank

"You know, Claire, I always admired curiosity in a woman," Jason said, stepping slowly into the dim light of the basement, his shoes crunching against the dusty concrete floor. "It’s a fatal flaw, but an admirable one."

I backed away until my spine hit the cold metal filing cabinets. My mind raced frantically, searching for a way out, a weapon, anything. My hand brushed against a heavy metal stapler on a nearby desk.

"You pushed him," I said, keeping my voice steady despite the sheer terror gripping my chest. "I saw the footage, Jason. It wasn't an accident. You tried to murder your own cousin."

Jason let out a dark, amused chuckle, raising the pistol slightly.

"Murder is such an ugly word," he said smoothly. "Let's call it a hostile takeover of management. Ethan was soft. He cared about ethics, about philanthropy, about saving the family legacy the old-fashioned way. The world doesn't run on honor, Claire. It runs on power. And power belongs to the ruthless."

"And your grandmother?" I challenged, stalling for time. "Does she know you're a killer?"

Jason's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing his features.

"The old bat suspects," Jason admitted bitterly. "She’s too smart for her own good, which is why she gave you that key, wasn't it? She thinks she can use you to play chess against me. But she forgot one simple rule of the game."

He pointed the barrel of the gun directly at my chest.

"Pawns don't survive when they step out of line."

My finger curled around the heavy metal stapler behind my back. My pulse roared in my ears like a freight train.

"You think killing me will stop the truth?" I whispered, staring down the barrel of the gun. "Ethan woke up once, Jason. He spoke to me. He knows what you did. And the moment he wakes up again—"

"He won't," Jason interrupted, his voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "Evelyn has her instructions. By morning, Ethan’s heart will stop permanently from 'natural complications.' And you? You'll be found at the bottom of the Hudson River, a depressed bride who couldn't handle the pressure of her new life."

He raised his arm, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"Any last words, sister-in-law?"

"Yeah," a deep, raspy voice echoed from the dark doorway behind him. "Don't miss."
