Chapter 1 - The Ring That Broke the Syndicate

The silence in the VIP wing of Manhattan General wasn't just quiet; it was suffocating.
Vivienne Armand’s diamond-encrusted heels clicked sharply against the sterile floor tiles, a sound like a countdown. She stared at Dante Bellaro’s outstretched hand—the hand that governed the city's underground, the hand that had signed execution orders, the hand that currently wore her engagement ring.
And that hand was reaching for a woman covered in hospital stains.
"Dante," Vivienne hissed, her perfect porcelain face contorting with a mixture of embarrassment and rage. She glanced at the five armed guards lining the walls. "You are disoriented. The medication has confused you. This... this peasant was caught trying to alter your IV charts. She is a spy. My father's men caught her red-handed."
Mara Vale didn't blink. She stood her ground, though her wrist throbbed where the guard had twisted it moments before. She looked at Dante, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She wasn't afraid for herself. She was terrified of what would happen if they looked too closely into her life outside these hospital walls.
"I didn't alter any charts," Mara said, her voice steady despite the chaos. "I was fixing the dosage. Someone replaced his antibiotic with a localized paralytic. If I hadn't changed it, he wouldn't have woken up. He would have suffered total organ failure within the hour."
Dante’s fingers twitched, his dark eyes locked onto Mara. The raspy voice returned, deeper this time, carrying the cold weight of the Bellaro legacy. "Step away from her, Vivienne."
"Dante, listen to reason—"
"I said," Dante growled, a low sound that made the lead bodyguard, Marco, immediately step back and bow his head, "step away from my wife."
The entire room seemed to lose its gravity. Vivienne stumbled back as if she had been physically struck. "Your... your what?"
Mara’s breath hitched. No. He wasn't supposed to say that. That was the agreement. That was the sacred oath they made three years ago in a hidden chapel in Sicily, before the war broke out, before he sent her away to protect her, and before he was forced into a political alliance with the Armand cartel.
"Marco," Dante commanded, his eyes never leaving Mara’s pale face. "Lock down the floor. No one leaves. Especially not the future queen of the Armand family."
Vivienne’s eyes went wide. "You can't do this! The alliance—my father will tear this city apart!"

"Let him try," Dante whispered, his grip finally catching Mara’s cold fingers. As he pulled her closer, he leaned in, his lips brushing her ear, tasting the salt of her sweat. "Where is he, Mara? Where is my son?"
Before Mara could answer, the glass window of the VIP room shattered into a million pieces as a sniper bullet tore through the air, missing Dante’s head by mere inches.
