Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Ledger

The crash sent the SUV spinning into an abandoned warehouse lot near the docks. Marco immediately opened fire through the shattered windshield, taking down two men in tactical gear before a bullet caught him in the shoulder.
"Go!" Dante ordered Mara, shoving a compact glock into her hands. "The back exit. Run!"
"I'm not leaving you!"
"Mara, I am a dead man walking if you stay. Protect our son!" Dante slammed his fist against the door, forcing it open. He stepped into the pouring rain, drawing his own weapon, looking every bit the monster the underworld feared.
Mara didn't look back. She ran through the shadows of the warehouse, her heart pounding in her ears. She knew how to handle a gun; Dante had made sure of that during their secret months in Italy. But she was a healer, not a killer.
As she burst through the rear exit into an alleyway, a figure stepped out of the darkness.
It wasn't an Armand soldier. It was Victor Armand himself—the patriarch of the cartel, a man with silver hair and eyes as cold as a winter grave. And next to him, holding a small, crying teddy bear, was a man holding a video screen. The screen showed a live feed of a tied-up three-year-old boy with Dante’s dark curls and Mara’s green eyes.
"Looking for this?" Victor smiled, holding up a small leather-bound book.
Mara froze. The ledger. The secret documentation of Dante’s offshore accounts and the legal declaration of Leo’s legitimacy as the sole heir to the Bellaro empire. She had kept it hidden in her locker at the hospital.
"How did you get that?" Mara whispered.

"My daughter may be arrogant, but she isn't stupid," Victor said smoothly. "She knew Dante was hiding a mistress. She just didn't realize the mistress had given birth to the crown prince of the city. Now, my dear, you are going to make a phone call to your husband. You are going to tell him to sign over the port authorities to me, or the boy goes into the Atlantic."
Suddenly, a heavy shadow fell from the fire escape above. Dante landed squarely on Victor’s bodyguard, driving a knife directly into his throat.
