Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Docks

Vivienne waved her hand, and her men forced Mara and the bleeding Dante into the back of a waiting van.
An hour later, they were inside a rusted shipping container at the edge of Pier 42. The doors were wide open, looking out over the black, churning waters of the ocean. Tied to a wooden chair in the center of the container was Leo. The little boy’s face was tear-stained, but the moment he saw Mara, his eyes lit up.
"Mamma!" he cried.
"Leo!" Mara lunged forward, but a guard dragged her back by her hair.
Dante was forced to his knees, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He looked at his son, his chest heaving. "Vivienne. Let the boy and the woman go. I will sign whatever you want. The accounts, the territory, the syndicates. It’s all yours."
Vivienne walked over to Leo, her long, manicured fingers tracing the boy's cheek. Leo flinched away. "He looks just like you, Dante. It’s almost a pity. But see, the problem with letting them live is that blood always remembers. Twenty years from now, this little boy would come looking for revenge. I can't have that loose end."
Victor, his hand crudely bandaged, stepped into the container. "End this now, Vivienne. The police are tracing the hospital shooting. We need to clear out."
Marco stepped forward, raising his gun to aim between Leo’s eyes.
"No!" Mara screamed, fighting against the guard holding her. She bit down hard on the man’s hand, drawing blood. He roared in pain and dropped her. Mara didn't run toward the exit; she threw herself over her son’s body just as Marco pulled the trigger.
BANG.
But the bullet didn't hit Mara.
May you like
Marco stumbled backward, a neat red hole appearing in the center of his forehead. He collapsed onto the rusted floor, dead before he hit the ground.
Everyone froze. The shot hadn't come from inside the container. It had come from the dark crane towering over the pier.
