Chapter 1 - THE PHOTOGRAPH OF DECEIT

The silence inside the dressing room was so heavy it felt suffocating. The bride, Clara, stared at the open locket trembling in her pale hands. The groom, Mark, leaned in, his eyes widening in pure horror as he looked at the tiny, faded photograph hidden beneath the glass.
It wasn't just a picture of Clara’s deceased mother, Eleanor.
It was a picture of Eleanor standing next to a newborn baby—a baby with a distinct, star-shaped birthmark on her right wrist. Mark’s gaze snapped from the photo directly to the seven-year-old flower girl, Lily.
Lily’s right sleeve was slightly pulled up. The exact same star-shaped birthmark was visible on her skin.
“This… this is impossible,” Clara stammered, her knees giving out as she collapsed onto the velvet sofa. “My mother died ten years ago! You were born seven years ago! How could she give you this locket?”
Lily didn’t cry. Her tear-streaked face suddenly turned eerily calm. She looked directly into Clara’s eyes and said words that sent a chill down everyone’s spine:
“She didn't die ten years ago, Clara. She died three days ago. And she told me to make sure you didn't marry him.”
Mark took a step back, his face turning ghostly white. “What is she talking about, Clara? You told me your mother died in a car crash when you were eighteen!”
Before Clara could answer, the door to the dressing room slammed open. Clara’s father, Richard, stood in the doorway, holding a glass of champagne. His smile vanished the moment he saw the open locket in Clara’s hand.

“Where did you get that?” Richard’s voice was low, laced with a dangerous threat.
Lily pointed a small, shaking finger at Richard. “He was there. He was the one who locked her in the basement of the old manor.”
