Chapter 8 - THE SHATTERED MIRROR (THE TWIST ENDING)

Mark fired. The bullet hit Richard in the shoulder, forcing him to release Clara.

Richard lost his footing on the muddy slope, screaming as he tumbled backward into the dark abyss below. The sound of his fall was swallowed by the roaring river deep in the ravine.

Clara scrambled back up to the road, pulling Lily close as Mark ran to them, dropping the gun and wrapping his arms around both of them in the rain.

“It’s over,” Mark sobbed, kissing Clara’s forehead. “It’s finally over.”

Three months later.

The storm had passed. The media firestorm surrounding the collapse of the Vance and Sterling empires had finally quieted down. Julian Vance and Richard’s surviving accomplices were serving life sentences in prison.

Clara sat in the sunny living room of a quiet seaside cottage. Lily was playing happily in the garden outside, her laughter ringing through the warm air. Mark walked up behind Clara, placing a warm cup of tea in her hands.

“Are you ready to move on?” Mark asked softly.

Clara smiled, holding the repaired gold locket around her neck. “Yes. We finally have our life back.”

Mark kissed her cheek and walked into the kitchen. Clara opened the locket once more, admiring the photo of her mother and the baby.

She pulled out a small magnifying glass she had bought earlier that day, wanting to look closely at her mother’s handwriting etched into the tiny silver inner plate of the locket—something she hadn't noticed before.

She cleaned the silver plate and read the microscopic text written under her mother's name.

As her eyes scanned the words, the smile froze on Clara's face. The cup of tea slipped from her hands, crashing onto the wooden floor.

The inscription did not read To my beloved daughter, Clara.

It read:

“To my true daughter, Lily. Beware of Clara. She was never in a coma. She helped her father lock me away.”

Clara slowly turned her head toward the garden. Lily was looking back at her through the window, holding a small silver latch in her hand—and smiling a cold, knowing smile.
