The silence inside the dressing room was so heavy it felt suffocating. The bride, Clara, stared at the open locket trembling in her pale hands. The groom, Mark, leaned in, his eyes widening in pure horror as he looked at the tiny, faded photograph hidden beneath the glass.

Clara froze, shielding Lily behind her. She reached into her pocket, holding the broken piece of the locket like a makeshift blade.

“Clara! Get in!” a voice yelled from inside the vehicle.

The driver leaned out into the rain. It wasn't one of Richard’s men. It was Dr. Samuel Evans—the manor’s former physician, the man Richard had accused of being Lily’s father.

“You have to trust me!” Dr. Samuel shouted, pushing the passenger door open. “Richard’s men are coming down the main road. If you stay here, they will kill both of you!”

Clara hesitated, but the sound of approaching security sirens made the decision for her. She jumped into the back seat with Lily, slamming the door just as Dr. Samuel slammed his foot on the accelerator, spinning the tires in the mud before speeding off into the dark night.

“Are you her father?” Clara demanded from the backseat, breathing heavily.
