Chapter 10 - THE FINAL SALUTEThree months later, the federal courthouse steps in downtown Hartford were swarming with reporters, camera crews, and flashbulbs.

Robert Callaway—dressed in a standard federal orange jumpsuit instead of a custom Brioni suit—was led down the stone steps in handcuffs, his head bowed, his once-impenetrable gaze fixed bitterly on the concrete. The trial had been swift, devastating, and absolute. The mountain of digital evidence Daniel provided, combined with my mother’s frantic, self-serving testimony, had sealed a twenty-year federal prison sentence without the possibility of parole.

Across the street, standing on the observation deck of the federal plaza, I stood in my crisp white summer Navy dress uniform, the gold braid gleaming brightly in the spring sunlight.

Daniel stood beside me, holding a warm cup of coffee and wearing a brand-new tweed jacket I had bought him for his promotion to Department Head at his high school.

As the police transport van pulled away with my father inside, I slowly raised my right hand to the brim of my crisp white cap, executing a crisp, flawless military salute.

It wasn't a salute of respect for the man who had hit me, nor for the tyrant who had built an empire on stolen valor.

It was a final, definitive salute to the past—acknowledging the battle, surviving the scars, and closing the chapter on the Callaway dynasty forever.

Daniel wrapped his arm around my waist, kissing the side of my head as the sirens faded into the distance.

"Ready to go home, Commander?" he asked softly.

I lowered my hand, smiling as the spring wind caught the edge of my uniform.

"Always," I said, and together, we walked down the steps into a future we built entirely on our own terms.
