Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER’S FINAL BETRAYALBefore the state troopers could reach my brother, my mother straightened up with a chilling, sudden composure. The tears on her face dried instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating mask that looked remarkably like my father's.

"You can't arrest me," my mother said, her voice dripping with ice as she stepped away from the fireplace.

Mayor Whitcomb raised an eyebrow. "Eleanor, your name is on the primary Cayman shell company account as the primary beneficiary. You signed the asset transfers."

"I signed them under duress," my mother countered smoothly, her eyes locking onto her husband with pure hatred. "And more importantly, I have a pre-nuptial agreement clause and a separate legal trust filed with the state attorney general's office three weeks ago. I knew about the fraud, Mayor. I knew for six months."

Robert’s head snapped toward her, his eyes bulging in utter disbelief. "You... you knew? You plotted behind my back?"

"I didn't plot behind your back, Robert. I prepared for your inevitable stupidity," Eleanor corrected him sharply, pulling a pristine legal document from her designer handbag. "I am turning over all of my personal access codes, bank records, and property deeds to the federal receiver in exchange for full immunity and witness protection separation."

She looked directly at me, her gaze devoid of maternal warmth, cold as winter steel. "And as for Sara... your naval career is safe, darling. I made sure the internal Navy JAG inquiries your father tried to bribe last month were quietly neutralized by my own legal team. Not because I love you, but because a disgraced naval officer daughter would have ruined my country club social standing."

The sheer, staggering narcissism of my mother left the entire room momentarily speechless. Even the journalists looked stunned by the casual betrayal playing out like a Greek tragedy in designer evening wear.
