Chapter 9 - THE NEW DAWNBy 3:00 AM, the grand ballroom of the Callaway estate was completely empty, save for the cleaning crew sweeping up broken glass and shattered crystal.

Daniel and I sat on the massive stone steps outside the front entrance, watching the gentle Christmas snow dust the hood of his modest, dented Honda Civic parked right beside my father's impounded Rolls-Royce.
The sky above Hartford was clearing, revealing a brilliant blanket of winter stars.
"Do you realize what this means?" Daniel asked, leaning his head back against the stone pillar. "Your father's empire is in receivership. The foundation is seized. Julian is facing federal conspiracy charges, and your mother is going to spend her retirement years fighting extradition from a Swiss bank lockout."
"It means we're free," I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder. My heavy dress blues felt light now—not weighted down by expectations, hypocrisy, or inherited lies, but light with the clean, crisp air of absolute truth.
"Free," Daniel repeated, wrapping his arm around me and pulling me close against the winter chill. "What happens next, Sara? Your naval career can take you anywhere now. Norfolk, San Diego, overseas..."

I looked down at my Navy cap resting in my lap—the cap Daniel had rescued from beneath the grand piano when the world was trying to crush me. I picked it up, brushed off a final speck of dust, and placed it firmly back on my head, adjusting the brim just right.
"Next," I said, turning to look into his warm, steady eyes with a fierce, unbreakable smile, "we build something real. Together."
