Chapter 5 - The Gala of Retribution

Two weeks later, the annual Grand Philanthropy Gala was held at the city’s premier convention center. It was the biggest night of the year for high society, attended by politicians, celebrities, and billionaires.

Victoria Vance, desperate to salvage her family's social standing, had pawned her last diamond ring to buy two entry tickets for herself and Camila. She believed that if she could just get Camila into the same room as Ethan, Camila could seduce him back.

"Put on your best red dress," Victoria had commanded her daughter. "Men are weak for their first loves. One smile, one tear, and he’ll give you back the house."

Inside the grand ballroom, the atmosphere was electrifying.

When Ethan arrived, dressed in a custom Tom Ford tuxedo, surrounded by private bodyguards, the crowd parted like the Red Sea. Camera flashes dazzled the room. Women from the wealthiest dynasties circled him like hawks, trying to get an introduction.

Camila watched from a corner, her heart aching. That was her man. He was supposed to belong to her.

Taking a deep breath, Camila pushed past the crowd and stepped onto the central stage runway just as Ethan was about to take the microphone to announce a fifty-million-dollar charity donation.

"Ethan!" Camila cried out, her voice amplified by the room's acoustics.

The crowd gasped. The cameras immediately turned toward her.

"Ethan, please!" Camila wept, playing the part of the heartbroken lover in front of hundreds of high-society guests. "I know I hurt you! I know I made a terrible mistake on our wedding day! But I was confused! I was pressurized! I will crawl on my knees if I have to... just give us another chance!"

Victoria stepped up beside her daughter, putting on a fake smile for the cameras. "Ethan, son... we were all under a lot of stress that day. Family forgives family. Let’s leave the past in the past."

The room buzzed with excitement. Reporters started snapping photos rapidly. This was the ultimate drama: the broke fiancé turned billionaire, and the bride who wanted him back.

Ethan looked at the two women standing before him. He didn't look angry. In fact, he smiled—a calm, devastating smile.

"Family forgives family?" Ethan asked, stepping up to the main microphone on stage. His voice boomed through the speakers, crystal clear.

"Let me ask the room a question," Ethan said, looking out at the crowd. "Three weeks ago, I stood at an altar in a rented suit. I offered this woman my entire heart. Do you know what her mother said to me?"

Ethan looked directly at Victoria, whose smile instantly froze.

"'Love doesn't pay the bills,'" Ethan quoted smoothly. "And then she had me thrown out into a rainstorm."

The crowd murmured in disgust. Several high-profile socialites began whispering and pointing at Victoria.

"And do you know what Camila said?" Ethan continued, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "She said, 'I can't marry you! You're poor!' She didn't care about three years of loyalty. She didn't care about my heart. She only cared about the size of my bank account."

Camila’s face burned bright red with shame as hundreds of eyes judged her mercilessly.

"So, Camila," Ethan said, turning to her with cold eyes. "You want me back now? Too bad. Because love might not pay the bills... but my money will never pay for your regret."

Suddenly, the massive LED screens behind the stage flickered.

An audio recording began playing loudly through the speakers. It was a wiretapped conversation between Victoria Vance and Marcus Sterling from the day before the wedding.

“Don't worry, Marcus,” Victoria’s recorded voice rang out. “Once Camila dumps Ethan at the altar, your family’s investment in our firm will clear. We’ll leave that peasant with nothing!”

“Perfect,” Marcus’s recorded voice replied. “He’s just a stepping stone.”

The entire ballroom went dead silent. The truth was exposed. It wasn't just a cancelation—it was a pre-meditated humiliation.
