Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vances

The public release of the audio recording sealed the fate of the Vance family forever.

Overnight, the story went viral on every social media platform. The tag #LoveDoesntPayTheBills trended number one worldwide. Millions of people condemned Camila and Victoria, turning them into global symbols of greed and treachery.

Vance Architecture declared bankruptcy within forty-eight hours.

With no income, no credit, and their assets seized by Ethan’s legal team, Victoria and Richard were forced out of their sprawling estate. They moved into a cramped, dilapidated apartment on the outskirts of the city—the very same neighborhood Victoria had once mocked Ethan for living in.

Marcus Sterling was arrested for corporate fraud after Ethan leaked evidence of his family's illegal shell companies to the federal authorities.

One rainy afternoon, Camila sat on the worn-out sofa of her family's small apartment. The roof was leaking, dripping water into a plastic bucket on the floor.

Her mother was sitting in the corner, staring blankly at the wall, ruined and hollowed out by stress. Her father had taken a low-paying job as a nighttime security guard just to afford groceries.

Camila’s phone buzzed. It was an email notification.

She opened it, expecting another rejection letter from a job application. Instead, it was an invitation to an exclusive gala—the inauguration of the Vance-Sterling Architectural Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to funding underprivileged young architects.

Attached to the email was a private message from Ethan's personal assistant:

"Mr. Sterling requests your presence tonight. A car has been sent to bring you to the main office."

Camila’s heart leaped. Is there still a chance? she thought desperately. Maybe he sees our suffering. Maybe he wants to forgive me.

She put on her last decent dress, wiped away her exhaustion with makeup, and ran downstairs to the waiting car.

When she arrived at Ethan’s skyscraper, she was escorted directly to the highest floor—not the office, but the building’s private helicopter pad.

The wind whipped around the roof as Ethan stood near the edge, looking out over the illuminated city. He wore a heavy wool trench coat, looking powerful and unreachable.

"Ethan?" Camila called out, stepping onto the wet helipad.

Ethan turned around slowly. "You came."

"Of course I came, Ethan!" Camila said, tears welling in her eyes. "Look at us... look at what's happened to my family. We've lost everything. We're living in misery! Hasn't your revenge gone far enough?"

Ethan walked toward her, stopping just a few feet away.

"You think this was about revenge, Camila?" Ethan asked quietly.

May you like

"Wasn't it?!" she sobbed. "You destroyed my father's business! You humiliated my mother! You ruined my life!"

"No," Ethan said calmly. "I simply showed you the truth of the world you loved so much. You chose money over love. I just gave you the full experience of both."
