Chapter 5 - The Courtroom AmbushThree days after their return from Miami, the emergency custody and property hearing convened in the county family court. The courtroom was cold, smelling of old paper and bureaucratic tension.

Marcos sat at the petitioner’s table flanked by a high-priced divorce attorney he had managed to retain using a secret cash stash hidden in his mother’s attic. Marcos looked exhausted, his hair unwashed, wearing the same rumpled suit he had worn during his Miami flight. Beside him, Pilar sat erect, her face carved into an expression of haughty indignation, glaring across the aisle toward the defense table as if she could burn me to ash with a glance.
I walked into the courtroom wearing a crisp, tailored charcoal pantsuit, my posture upright and unyielding. In my arms, wrapped in a soft white cashmere blanket, slept my newborn son.
My attorney, Harrison Vance, stood beside me, opening a thick leather binder filled with color-coded exhibits.
"Your Honor," Marcos’s attorney began smoothly, standing up and adjusting his tie. "We are asking for an immediate emergency injunction returning our clients to the marital residence, granting sole custody of the infant to Mr. Sterling, and ordering a psychological evaluation for Mrs. Sterling, who has demonstrated severe erratic behavior, including baseless accusations of financial fraud and unlawful confinement."
Judge Thomas, a sharp-eyed veteran of the family court bench with zero tolerance for manipulation, looked over his reading glasses at Marcos’s lawyer. "Counselor, your client’s petition includes an affidavit claiming Mrs. Sterling abandoned her home willingly while pregnant. Yet our docket contains a time-stamped video file submitted by the local police department showing deadbolted doors, severed telephone lines, and audio recordings of your client explicitly instructing Mr. Sterling to trap his wife inside while she was in active labor."
The courtroom fell dead silent. Marcos flinched as if he had been struck.
"Your Honor, those are falsified—” Marcos started to stammer, half-rising from his chair.
"Sit down, Mr. Sterling," Judge Thomas snapped, his voice ringing like a gavel strike. "You are under oath. And we haven't even gotten to the fun part yet."
Harrison Vance stepped forward, placing a thick stack of certified financial forensics reports in front of the judge. "Your Honor, we aren't just contesting custody. We are moving for an immediate criminal referral for grand larceny, wire fraud, forgery of legal instruments, and conspiracy to commit unlawful imprisonment. Furthermore, we submit a complete asset forfeiture audit proving that every single dollar used to fund the Sterling family’s lifestyle over the past three years was embezzled from my client’s pre-marital inheritance."

Pilar let out a sharp gasp, half-rising from her seat. "That’s a lie! She gave us those funds voluntarily! She was a dutiful wife—she wanted to contribute!"
Judge Thomas turned his piercing gaze directly onto Pilar. "Mrs. Sterling, unless you want to spend the next ten years meditating on your financial theories inside a federal penitentiary, I suggest you advise your son to sign every single consent form, deed transfer, and custody waiver placed on your table right now. Because if you don't, I will sign an arrest warrant for both of you before the clock strikes noon."
