Chapter 7 - The Final AuditSix months later, the dust had finally settled, leaving behind a landscape utterly transformed.

The suburban fortress where I had once been treated like an invisible servant was now officially listed under my name in county records, completely gutted and renovated from top to bottom. Every trace of Pilar’s tacky gold-plated interior design had been stripped away and replaced with clean, modern minimalism—light wood, open spaces, and absolute peace.
Marcos and Pilar’s legal nightmare was only beginning. The federal asset recovery unit had successfully seized every remaining hidden bank account, offshore holding, and luxury vehicle they possessed. Marcos was currently facing trial on multiple felony counts of forgery, wire fraud, and unlawful imprisonment, while Pilar was fighting parallel charges for conspiracy and embezzlement. Their high-priced defense attorneys had abandoned them weeks ago when the retainer funds ran dry, leaving them to rely on overworked public defenders who advised them to accept plea deals involving substantial prison time.
As for me, I sat on the back patio of my newly reclaimed home, watching the afternoon sun dip below the tree line. My son, now six months old, gurgled happily in his stroller, his little hands reaching out for the dancing shadows of the oak leaves above.
My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was an email notification from my firm’s executive board, confirming my promotion to Senior Partner of Forensic Compliance, accompanied by a flexible remote-work agreement that allowed me to raise my son on my own terms, in my own home, surrounded by safety and absolute financial independence.
