Chapter 4 - THE SCHOOLYARD AMBUSH

By the time Julian and I arrived at the elementary school, the scene was absolute chaos. A throng of cheap paparazzi and local tabloid reporters were gathered outside the iron gates. In the center of it all was Victor Hale, looking disheveled, wearing a wrinkled suit, holding four oversized teddy bears, and weeping loudly for the cameras.

"I just want to see my babies!" Victor cried out to a reporter holding a microphone. "My ex-wife has brainwashed them! She’s keeping them from me because of a billionaire's influence! I am a reformed man, a loving father who was denied his right to know his children!"

The sheer hypocrisy made my blood boil. Julian’s security detail moved swiftly, pushing through the reporters to clear a path for us. As soon as the media saw Julian Vance and me, the camera flashes became blinding.

"Ms. Vance! Is it true you hid the quadruplets from Victor?" "Mr. Vance, are you using your wealth to keep a father from his daughters?"

Victor saw us and his eyes lit up with a predatory gleam. He rushed toward the barricade, holding up the teddy bears. "Clara! Thank God you're here! Let me see them! Let me give my daughters their gifts! Don't be cruel!"

I stopped right in front of him, separated only by the school’s iron gate. The principal and two police officers stood right behind me.

"Victor," I said, my voice cutting through the noise of the shutter clicks. "Get away from this school."

"Clara, please!" he begged loudly, ensuring the microphones caught every word. "I know I made mistakes. But I have a right to be in their lives! Look at me, I'm begging you on my knees!" He actually dropped to his knees on the pavement, sobbing dramatically. It was a masterclass in narcissistic manipulation.

Suddenly, the heavy front doors of the school opened.

The principal tried to stop them, but my four daughters walked out onto the steps. They weren't crying. They weren't scared. They held hands, forming a solid line, looking down at the circus at the gate.

The reporters went completely wild, aiming their lenses at the children.

Victor looked up, gasping. "My daughters! Look at daddy! Come to daddy!"

Lily walked forward first, her face completely stoic. She didn't look at the teddy bears. She looked straight into Victor's eyes.

"We don't know you," Lily said clearly. Her voice was amplified by the sudden silence of the press. "You are the man from the wedding who said we were rented. You are the man who made our mommy cry seven years ago."

Daisy stepped up next. "Our mommy worked three jobs to buy us shoes. You weren't there."

Violet crossed her arms. "You don't want us. You just want the cameras to look at you."

Chloe finished, pointing a tiny finger at Julian. "That’s Uncle Julian. He protects us. You're just a bad man from the internet."

The reporters stopped snapping photos. They looked at each other, suddenly realizing they were being used by a pathetic fraud. The narrative had completely flipped. This wasn't a story about a grieving father; it was a story about a deadbeat dad getting publicly schooled by his own brilliant seven-year-old daughters.

Victor’s face twisted from fake grief to ugly, unbridled rage. He stood up, tossing the teddy bears to the ground, stomping on them. "You ungrateful little brats!" he hissed, dropping the facade entirely. "I gave you your DNA! Without me, you wouldn't even exist! Clara, you taught them to say this! You’re going to pay for this in court! I will take everything from you!"

"You have nothing left to take, Victor," Julian said, stepping forward, his presence completely eclipsing Victor’s. "The police are here because I filed a restraining order an hour ago. You are currently trespassing on school property, violating a corporate cease-and-desist, and disturbing the peace."

The two police officers stepped forward, grabbing Victor by his arms.

"Victor Hale, you are under arrest," the officer stated, clicking handcuffs around his wrists.

As Victor was dragged away, screaming profanities at me, at Julian, and at his own children, the press captured every single second of his breakdown. His desperate attempt to save his reputation had officially destroyed it beyond any hope of repair.

But as the crowd dispersed, Julian’s phone rang. He answered it, listened for a moment, and his face turned incredibly grim. He looked up at me, a cold dread in his eyes.

"Clara... Victor’s lawyers just fast-tracked the custody hearing. It's scheduled for tomorrow morning. And they’ve brought in a surprise witness who claims to have proof that you are an unfit mother."
