Chapter 5 - THE COURTROOM TRAP

The family courtroom was cold, sterile, and dripping with tension. Victor sat at the petitioner’s table, looking clean-shaven and wearing a conservative gray suit provided by his legal team. He looked smug, confident that his secret weapon would win him the case.

I sat at the defense table with Julian beside me, holding my hands under the desk. The girls were in the private waiting room with a child psychologist, protected from the venom of the courtroom.

The judge, a stern, no-nonsense woman named Judge Evelyn Thorne, banged her gavel. "We are here to determine temporary custody and visitation rights for the Hale quadruplets. Petitioner, call your first witness."

Victor’s lawyer stood up, a greasy man with a sly smile. "Your Honor, we call to the stand a woman who knows the respondent better than anyone during her pregnancy and the early years of the children's lives. We call Clara's own biological mother, Margaret Vance."

My heart stopped.

The doors opened, and in walked Margaret. The woman who had abandoned me when I was a teenager, the woman who had refused to help me when I begged her for rent money while pregnant with the quadruplets, telling me I was a "burden." Victor had somehow tracked her down, paid her off, and brought her here to destroy me.

Margaret took the stand, refusing to look me in the eye.

"Mrs. Vance," Victor’s lawyer began. "Please tell the court about Clara’s stability as a mother."

Margaret put on a theatrical, sorrowful sigh. "It breaks my heart to say this, Your Honor, but Clara has always been unstable. When she got pregnant, she refused all family help. She isolated herself. She lived in squalor, putting those poor babies in danger. She has a deep resentment toward men, and she is using those children to manipulate Mr. Vance, her boss, for financial gain. She is entirely unfit."

Victor smirked at me from across the room. He thought he had won. He thought my own family turning against me would be the final blow.

I felt tears prickling my eyes, but Julian leaned over, whispering in my ear. "Trust me, Clara. We knew they would try this. Look at the judge."

Judge Thorne was looking at Margaret with a highly skeptical expression. "Is that all, Mrs. Vance?"

"Yes, Your Honor. I just want my grandchildren to be safe with their father," Margaret whimpered.

Julian’s lead attorney, a legendary trial lawyer named Marcus Vance (no relation to Julian), stood up calmly. "Your Honor, if I may cross-examine."

Marcus walked to the podium, holding a thick folder. "Mrs. Margaret Vance. You claim you care about your grandchildren. Can you tell the court the exact birthdays of the quadruplets?"

Margaret blinked, stuttering. "Uh... well, it was in the winter... seven years ago..."

"You don't know," Marcus said sharply. "Let’s try an easier one. Can you tell the court how much money you received from Victor Hale’s legal defense fund account via a shell company exactly four days ago?"

Victor’s lawyer leapt up. "Objection! Relevance!"

"Overruled," Judge Thorne snapped. "Answer the question, witness."

Margaret turned pale. "It... it was a gift... twenty-five thousand dollars..."

"It was a bribe for perjury," Marcus corrected fiercely. "Your Honor, we submit into evidence Exhibit A: Bank records showing a direct transfer from Victor Hale’s remaining offshore accounts to Margaret Vance. We also submit Exhibit B: Child Protective Services reports from seven years ago, initiated by Clara herself, seeking assistance, which explicitly state that Margaret Vance refused emergency housing to her pregnant daughter, citing that she 'didn't want to deal with the noise of multiple babies.'"

The courtroom went dead silent. Margaret looked as if she were about to faint.

"Furthermore," Marcus continued, his voice booming. "We submit Exhibit C: A comprehensive financial audit of Victor Hale. He is currently six hundred thousand dollars in debt, facing three separate fraud lawsuits from the Whitmore family, and has no stable residence. He is not seeking custody out of love; he is seeking child support from my client, who is a highly successful executive, to pay off his criminal debts."

Judge Thorne’s eyes flashed with absolute fury. She looked down at Victor, then at Margaret.

"Are you finished, counselor?" Judge Thorne asked Marcus.

"We have one more piece of evidence, Your Honor," Marcus said, turning to look at Julian.

Julian stood up from his seat. He walked to the center of the courtroom, standing tall, his presence completely dominating the room. He looked directly at the judge.

"Your Honor, to ensure there is absolutely no question regarding the stability, security, and future of Lily, Daisy, Violet, and Chloe... I have filed a petition this morning, with Clara’s full consent."

Julian turned to look at me, his eyes full of a deep, unwavering devotion.

"I have filed a formal application for marriage intent and the subsequent full legal adoption of the four girls. I am pledging my entire estate, my name, and my life to protect them. They will never be small. They will never be abandoned. They are, and will always be, my daughters."
