Chapter 3 - THE DESPERATE RATS

Two weeks passed since the disastrous wedding, and the fallout was glorious. The "Hale-Whitmore Altar Catastrophe" had gone completely viral. Videos taken by secret catering staff had flooded social media, racking up hundreds of millions of views. Victor’s name was mud. He had been thoroughly blacklisted from every country club, corporate board, and high-society event in the city.

But a cornered rat is always the most dangerous.

I was sitting in my spacious new office at Vance International—a perk of my recent promotion—reviewing financial reports when my phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. Usually, I ignored them, but something compelled me to answer.

"Clara... please, don't hang up."

It was Victor. But the voice didn't sound like the arrogant, booming Victor of old. He sounded ragged, breathless, and completely broken.

"What do you want, Victor?" I asked, my voice entirely devoid of emotion.

"I need to see the girls," he pleaded, a pathetic sob catching in his throat. "They're my daughters, Clara. I have a right to see them. I was confused at the wedding... I was under so much pressure from the Whitmores. I didn't mean what I said. I want to be a father to them."

I let out a cold, sharp laugh. "A father? You denied their existence in front of five hundred people, Victor. You called them rented children. You didn't pay a single cent of child support for seven years. You don't have rights. You have a mountain of debt and a PR nightmare."

"Clara, please! I'm begging you!" he wailed. "The Whitmores are suing me for breach of contract! The banks are foreclosing on my apartment! My investors pulled out! If you just let me do a joint press conference with you... if we show the world we are co-parenting... it will fix everything. For the sake of our daughters, save my life!"

There it was. The true motive. He didn't care about Lily, Daisy, Violet, or Chloe. He cared about his reputation. He wanted to use my daughters as a shield to repair his ruined image.

"Never call this number again," I said coldly, and slammed the phone down.

An hour later, Julian walked into my office. His usual stoic expression was replaced by a tight, serious grimace. He closed the door behind him and sat across from my desk.

"Clara, we have a problem," Julian said smoothly, though his eyes betrayed deep concern. "My security team just intercepted a legal filing. Victor isn't backing down. Backed by a shady, low-tier predatory law firm, he has filed for emergency full custody of the girls."

I froze, the blood draining from my face. "Custody? On what grounds? He’s a stranger to them!"

"He’s playing dirty," Julian explained, leaning forward. "He’s claiming that you intentionally hid the pregnancy from him to extort him later. He’s claiming that your high-stress job at my company makes you an unfit, neglectful mother, and that he, now being unemployed and having 'all the time in the world,' is the better candidate to provide a stable home. Furthermore, they are alleging that my involvement is an inappropriate, coercive relationship."

I felt a sudden wave of panic washing over me. The system could be unpredictable, and wealthy men—even desperate ones—knew how to manipulate loopholes. The thought of Victor taking my girls away, even for a weekend, made me feel physically ill.

"He won't touch them," I whispered, my hands shaking. "I'll fight him with everything I have."

Julian reached across the desk and gently placed his hand over mine. His touch was warm, steady, and incredibly grounding. "You aren't fighting alone, Clara. I’ve already retained the top family law attorneys in the country. But Victor is desperate, which means he’s going to try something stupid before we even get to a courtroom. I've upgraded the security at your apartment, and I have guards watching the girls’ school."

"Thank you, Julian," I said, looking into his eyes. "Why are you doing all this for us? It’s far beyond what any boss would do."

Julian looked at me for a long, silent moment. The icy exterior of the billionaire mogul melted, revealing something deeply vulnerable underneath. "Because seven years ago, someone threw away the most resilient, incredible woman I’ve ever met. And I’m not about to let him hurt you, or the four amazing girls who deserve the world, ever again."

Before I could process the sudden intensity of his words, my phone rang again. This time, it was the school principal.

My heart dropped into my stomach.

"Ms. Vance? Come quickly. A man claiming to be the girls' father is at the front gates with a camera crew, and he's trying to force his way inside."
