Chapter 2 - THE BILLIONAIRE'S SHIELD

Julian Vance did not attend social gatherings lightly. His presence at the Whitmore-Hale wedding was supposed to be the ultimate endorsement for Victor’s new business venture. Instead, Julian stepped past the trembling security guards and stood directly beside me, his tall frame instantly casting a protective shadow over my daughters and me.

"Mr. Vance," Victor stammered, sweating through his expensive collar. "Please, excuse this chaotic disruption. This woman is a scam artist. We are having her removed—"

"Shut up, Victor," Julian said smoothly, not even looking at him. His dark eyes were fixed on my daughters. Slowly, the notoriously cold, ruthless billionaire knelt down on one knee on the gravel driveway, bringing himself to eye level with my girls.

The crowd watched in breathless shock. Julian Vance didn't kneel for anyone.

"Hi there," Julian said, his voice surprisingly gentle as he looked at Daisy, who was holding a small stuffed rabbit. "Are you girls okay?"

"We're brave," Chloe piped up, her little chin lifted proudly. "Mommy says Vance girls don't cry over bad men."

Vance girls.

The crowd erupted into a frenzy of frantic muttering. Victor’s jaw dropped so low it looked unhinged. Eleanor gripped her bridal bouquet so tightly the white roses snapped in her hands.

Julian smiled—a genuine, rare smile that the media had never once captured. He stood back up, adjusting his cuffs, and looked directly at Victor. "You see, Victor, there’s something you didn’t check before you sent that pathetic, arrogant invitation. You forgot to check who Clara has been working for over the last five years."

The truth was, when Victor left me penniless, I didn't just survive; I fought. I went back to school at night, raising four babies in a cramped studio apartment. Three years ago, I landed a job at Vance International as a data analyst. Julian Vance had noticed my work ethic. When he found out I was a single mother of quadruplets, instead of pitying me, he promoted me to his executive strategy team. He knew my history. He knew exactly what Victor had done. And when I showed Julian the wedding invitation, he was the one who suggested the limousine. He was the one who told me it was time to stop hiding.

"Clara is the Lead Strategist for my global expansion project," Julian announced to the entire crowd, his voice commanding and clear. "And as of two weeks ago, her daughters legally carry the Vance name through a formal adult mentorship guardianship pact. If you insult them, you insult me."

Eleanor’s mother stepped forward, her face pale. "Mr. Vance... surely you aren't siding with this... this commoner over our family? Victor is joining the Whitmore estate!"

"The Whitmore estate is built on a mountain of bad debt, Evelyn," Julian replied coldly, pulling a sleek tablet from his jacket pocket. "Which brings me to my actual reason for attending today. Victor, you approached my firm for a fifty-million-dollar investment to launch your new logistics company. You used the Whitmore name as collateral."

Victor’s eyes widened with sheer terror. "Julian, please, let’s talk about this in private—"

"There is no private," Julian interrupted. "Vance International does not do business with men who lack basic human integrity. A man who abandons his pregnant wife and denies his own children on a public stage is a liability. Not only is your funding officially denied, but I have also shorted every single stock associated with the Hale and Whitmore conglomerates as of ten minutes ago."

A collective gasp went up. In the business world, a short from Julian Vance was a financial death sentence.

"No... no, you can't do this!" Victor screamed, losing all his polished manners. He rushed down the marble steps toward us, his face twisted in rage. "Clara! You ruined this! You did this on purpose! You jealous, vindictive bitch—"

He lunged toward me, his hand raised. But he never made it. Julian stepped in front of me seamlessly, catching Victor’s wrist in a viselike grip. The crack of Victor’s bones resisting the hold was audible.

"If you ever speak to her like that again, or if you even look in the direction of these children," Julian whispered, his voice dripping with lethal promise, "I won't just ruin you financially, Victor. I will make sure you disappear from this society so completely that people will forget you ever existed."

Julian threw Victor’s arm down. Victor stumbled back onto the gravel, scraping his knees, his pristine tuxedo covered in dirt.

"Come, Clara," Julian said, turning to me with absolute courtesy. "The air here is foul. Let’s take the girls out for ice cream."

I looked down at Victor, who was groveling on the floor, looking smaller than I ever thought possible. I felt no anger. No regret. Only a profound, beautiful sense of freedom.

"Goodbye, Victor," I said softly. "Thank you for the invitation."

As we turned to leave, the ultimate bomb dropped. Eleanor Whitmore tore off her veil, threw her engagement ring directly at Victor's face, and screamed, "The wedding is off! Get off my property, you lying parasite!"
