Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Mastermind

Three weeks had passed since the dramatic collapse of Vance Global and the rise of EV International. The media storm had finally quieted down. Julian Vance and Arthur Pendelton were awaiting trial in a federal detention center, their names completely scrubbed from the high-society registers. The Montgomery family estate had been auctioned off, leaving Chloe and her parents living in a cramped, two-bedroom apartment in the outskirts of the city.

Evelyn Vance sat in her new office on the penthouse floor of the EV International tower. The room was minimalist, modern, and entirely her own. She finally felt at peace.

Her assistant entered the room, carrying a small, unmarked wooden box. "Madam Chairwoman, this was delivered by a private courier. There was no return address, but the courier said it was urgent that you open it personally."

Evelyn frowned, gesturing for the assistant to leave the box on her desk.

Once alone, Evelyn opened the box. Inside lay a leather-bound diary with the initials C.M. embossed in gold—Chloe Montgomery's private diary, seized during the liquidation of her estate. Accompanying the diary was a small, high-tech digital audio recorder and a single, handwritten note:

“You looked at the husband, you looked at the CEO, but you never looked at the bride. Read page 142.”

Evelyn opened the diary to the specified page. The entry was dated exactly one year ago—months before Julian had even proposed to Chloe.

“Today, I finally convinced Julian that we should get married. The idiot actually thinks I love him. He has no idea that I know exactly who his real father was. He thinks he’s keeping a secret from me, but I’m the one pulling the strings. Once we marry, and once his arrogant aunt humiliates us—which I will ensure she does by leaking information to her about how we treat the 'lower class'—the Will’s clause will trigger. Arthur thinks he’s going to control the trust, but I have the leverage to destroy Arthur too. Soon, the Vance fortune will belong entirely to the Montgomery name. We just need the old lady to take the bait.”

Evelyn’s eyes widened as she read the calculated, ruthless strategy laid out by the young woman she had dismissed as a superficial, arrogant socialite. Chloe hadn't been a victim of Julian’s schemes; she had engineered the entire scenario. She had intentionally acted horribly to the catering staff, knowing Evelyn was undercover, to provoke the exact reaction that would trigger the hostile takeover.

Evelyn picked up the digital audio recorder and pressed play.

A voice filled the room—Chloe’s voice, but it wasn't the panicked, weeping voice from the server room. It was cold, arrogant, and victorious.

"Hello, Evelyn," Chloe’s voice said through the speaker. "If you are listening to this, it means your legal team successfully wiped out Julian and Arthur. Congratulations. You did exactly what I expected you to do. You eliminated my useless husband and his greedy partner for me."

Evelyn leaned forward, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You think I’m broke now, don't you?" Chloe laughed, a sharp, chilling sound. "You think because you liquidated the Montgomery assets, we have nothing. But you forgot one thing, Evelyn. My mother, Beatrice, wasn't born a Montgomery. Her maiden name was Cordelia."

Evelyn gasped. The Cordelia Group.

"My mother was Charles Vance’s first love, before he met you," Chloe’s voice continued, every word dripping with venomous triumph. "The blind trust wasn't set up to protect Julian. It was set up to protect me. I am Charles Vance’s biological daughter. Julian was adopted by my mother's brother to cover up the timeline. The fifty-one percent of voting shares? They didn't vanish when you dissolved Vance Global Inc. The software shell you built? It requires a secondary encryption key that can only be unlocked by a direct genetic match to Charles Vance."

On the desk, Evelyn's tablet suddenly lit up. A red warning banner flashed across the screen: UNAUTHORIZED GENETIC AUTHENTICATION DETECTED. CORE DATA SEIZURE IN PROGRESS.

"Thank you for doing the heavy lifting, Aunt Evelyn," Chloe’s voice concluded with a whisper. "You cleaned the floor for me at my wedding. Now, I’m going to clean out your entire life. See you in court."

The recording ended with a sharp click.

Evelyn stared at the flashing red screen of her tablet. For the first time in her life, she realized she hadn't been playing a game against amateurs. She had been playing against a legacy of deception that spanned generations.

But as the data began to drain from her system, Evelyn didn't panic. She didn't cry. She didn't react.

Slowly, she stood up, adjusted the collar of her elegant crimson dress, and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the city that she had conquered once before. A slow, dangerous smile crept onto her face.

The waitress had built an empire from nothing. The bride wanted a war.

May you like

"Game on, Chloe," Evelyn whispered into the empty room.
