Chapter 5 - The Queen’s Counter-Move

The morning sun rose over the city, casting a pale light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Vance Global headquarters. By 8:00 AM, the news of Evelyn Vance's sudden ouster had sent shockwaves through the global financial markets. The company's stock was volatile, reacting to the sudden coup orchestrated by Arthur Pendelton.

Inside the grand boardroom on the 80th floor, Arthur sat at the head of the massive mahogany table, surrounded by the board of directors. The atmosphere was tense.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Arthur announced, leaning forward. "The transition is complete. Evelyn Vance has signed the exit paperwork and vacated the northern hills estate. Under my leadership, The Cordelia Group will stabilize our assets and move forward with the acquisition of the Montgomery logistics network for pennies on the dollar."

Before the board members could applaud, the double doors of the boardroom swung open.

Evelyn Vance walked in.

She was not wearing a navy suit, nor was she wearing a waitress uniform. She wore a simple, elegant crimson dress that commanded the attention of everyone in the room. She was alone, carrying nothing but a small, sleek black tablet.

Arthur frowned, his security detail moving to block her. "Evelyn, you no longer have access to this building. Security, escort her out."

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Arthur," Evelyn said, her voice calm and steady as she walked past the guards, who hesitated at the sheer authority of her presence. She tapped her tablet, and the massive projection screen behind Arthur flickered to life.

Instead of stock charts or financial reports, the screen displayed a live broadcast of a warehouse facility located near the city docks. Inside the warehouse were hundreds of automated servers, identical to the ones at the Vance estate, but much larger.

"What is this?" Arthur demanded. "A backup data center?"

"No, Arthur," Evelyn said, standing at the opposite end of the table. "This is the actual core infrastructure of Vance Global. Twenty-five years ago, when Charles told me he wanted to set up a private, encrypted network for his personal projects, I realized he was hiding something. I didn't know about the affair, and I didn't know about Julian. But I knew Charles."

The board members leaned forward, listening intently.

"So," Evelyn continued, a sharp, brilliant smile appearing on her face, "I allowed him to build his network. I allowed him to draft his wills and his trust agreements within that network. But every line of code, every corporate asset, and every contract signed under Vance Global for the past two decades was routed through a proprietary software shell that I own personally. Not the company. Not Charles. Me."

Arthur’s face paled. He began typing furiously on his laptop. "That’s impossible. The voting shares—"

"—The voting shares you took control of, Arthur, belong to a company called Vance Global Inc.," Evelyn interrupted smoothly. "But as of five minutes ago, I have officially dissolved the operational licenses of Vance Global Inc. active in this country. I have moved all proprietary technology, all client databases, and all shipping manifests to a new entity: The EV International Group."

She tapped her tablet again. The screen changed to show the global markets. The stock for Vance Global Inc. was literally flatlining, dropping to zero in real-time as all its value was vacuumed out into Evelyn’s new company.

"You control fifty-one percent of a ghost ship, Arthur," Evelyn whispered, her voice echoing in the stunned silence of the boardroom. "You have the building. You have the chairs. You have the name. But the empire? The empire belongs to me."

Arthur stood up, his chair rattling against the floor. "You can't do this! The board won't allow it! This is asset stripping!"

The board members looked at Arthur, then at Evelyn, and then at their own tablets, which were receiving invitations to join the board of EV International with doubled salaries and massive stock options. One by one, the board members stood up from the table, gathered their briefcases, and walked over to stand behind Evelyn.

Within two minutes, Arthur was left sitting alone at the table, just as the Montgomery family had been left in the dark ballroom.

"You think you’ve won, Evelyn?" Arthur hissed, his voice shaking with desperate rage. "You’ve destroyed your husband's legacy! You’ve ruined his son!"

"Charles destroyed his own legacy the moment he lied to me," Evelyn said coldly. "And as for his son... Julian will have plenty of time to reflect on his actions in federal prison. And you, Arthur, will be joining him. The federal agents are waiting downstairs. They found the offshore accounts you used to fund The Cordelia Group using embezzled company money."

As Evelyn turned to leave the boardroom, her new board following her in a perfect formation, she paused at the door, looking back at Arthur one last time.
