Chapter 2 - The Darkness Descends

The screaming in the dark ballroom was chaotic. Guests tripped over chairs, expensive gowns tore against tables, and the sound of weeping broke out among the Montgomery family.
"Julian! Do something!" Chloe shrieked, her voice echoing in the pitch black. "Get the lights back on! Call your aunt! Fix this!"
"Fix it?" Julian’s voice was hollow, filled with a terrifying realization. "You don't understand, Chloe. You don't know who she is. When Evelyn Vance cuts you off, you don't exist anymore. The world erases you."
A few minutes later, the emergency backup lights kicked in, casting a sickly, dim red glow over the ruined ballroom. Most of the high-society guests, realizing the Montgomerys were now toxic liabilities, were already rushing for the exits, eager to distance themselves from the impending financial massacre.
Within ten minutes, the grand hall was empty, save for Julian, Chloe, Beatrice, and Chloe's father, Richard Montgomery, who had just rushed into the room, his face pale and sweating.
"We’re ruined," Richard gasped, dropping his briefcase onto the floor. "I just received an automated alert from the central bank. All our corporate lines of credit have been frozen. The stock in Montgomery Developments is plunging in the after-hours market. Julian, I thought you said your family was fully backing this merger!"
"I thought they were!" Julian yelled, gripping his hair in frustration. "I didn't think she would show up herself! I didn't think she would masquerade as a waitress!"
Beatrice, recovering from her initial shock, slapped her son hard across the face. The crack resounded through the empty hall.
"You fool!" Beatrice hissed. "You told us she was a senile old woman living out her days in seclusion! You told us you were the one running the daily operations of the Vance estate! We built our entire financial strategy on your lies!"
Julian rubbed his bruised cheek, a dark, sinister expression crossing his features. The submissive, panicked nephew vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal.
"Don't act so innocent, Mother-in-law," Julian spat, glaring at Beatrice. "You wanted the Vance money just as badly as I wanted Chloe. And don't forget, we still have a card to play."
Chloe wiped her smeared makeup, looking at her new husband with a mixture of disgust and curiosity. "What card, Julian? She just revoked our funding. She’s demanding forty million dollars by midnight. We don’t have forty hours, let alone forty minutes!"
Julian reached into his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a encrypted silver flash drive. He held it up under the dim red emergency light.
"Evelyn thinks she’s untouchable," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with a dangerous mixture of fear and malice. "But for the past six months, while she was playing the role of the reclusive philanthropist, I’ve been working with inside sources in the Vance Global tech division. This drive contains the master cryptographic keys to the Vance automated trading algorithms. If we can bypass her personal biometric authorization, we can transfer fifty million dollars out of the offshore shell accounts before the morning bell rings."
Richard Montgomery gasped. "Julian... that’s corporate espionage. That’s federal fraud. If Evelyn finds out, she won’t just ruin us financially—she’ll ensure we spend the rest of our lives in a maximum-security prison."
"We are already ruined, Richard!" Julian snarled. "Do you think Evelyn is going to show mercy? She gave us until midnight. We either take what we need tonight and flee the country, or we wake up tomorrow as penniless convicts. Choose."
Chloe looked at the drive, then at her father, and finally at her mother. The arrogance that had defined her all night returned, twisted into something much uglier.
"Julian is right," Chloe said, her voice hardening. "Evelyn Vance insulted me in front of the entire high society. She humiliated my mother. She ruined my wedding day. If she wants a war, we give her a war. But Julian... how do we bypass her biometrics? You said it yourself, she controls the system."
Julian smiled, a cold, predatory expression. "Evelyn has one weakness. Her late husband's estate in the northern hills. It’s where she keeps her private server terminal—the only terminal that doesn't require her physical presence if the override protocols are activated from within the house. And tonight, the house is empty. The security staff are all deployed here at the venue."
"Then we go now," Beatrice said, her eyes flashing with greed and vengeance. "We take what is ours, and we leave that old hag with nothing."
What the family did not know was that the grand ballroom was equipped with state-of-the-art, military-grade audio surveillance—installed by the catering company, which was owned entirely by a subsidiary of Vance Global.
In the back of a black luxury limousine driving through the rainy streets of the city, Evelyn Vance sat with a pair of sleek wireless headphones resting in her lap. She had heard every single word.
Arthur Pendelton looked at her through the rearview mirror. "Madam Chairwoman, shall I call the state police? We can have them arrested for conspiracy before they even reach the highway."
Evelyn looked out the window at the city lights reflecting off the wet pavement. She adjusted the collar of her simple black uniform, which she still wore.
"No, Arthur," Evelyn said softly. "Let them go to the estate. Let them think they are winning. I want them to reach the terminal. I want them to input the keys."
May you like
"But Madam," Arthur warned, "if they execute the override, the damage to the automated funds could cause a temporary market fluctuation. It’s risky."
"Risk is the price of total elimination, Arthur," Evelyn replied, her eyes cold and calculating. "They think they are walking into a vault. They don't realize they are walking into an execution chamber. Drive to the estate. It's time to bring this family drama to its absolute final act."
