Chapter 3 - The Northern Hills Trap

The rain poured down in sheets as the black SUV tore through the iron gates of the Vance Estate in the northern hills. The gates were wide open, swaying gently in the wind, a detail that Julian noted with a brief flicker of anxiety, but his desperation overrode his caution.
"Hurry up, Julian!" Beatrice urged from the backseat, clutching her designer purse as if it could protect her from the storm. "The clock is ticking. It’s already eleven-fifteen. We have forty-five minutes before the bank default triggers."
Julian parked the car violently near the grand stone entrance. The mansion loomed over them, a massive, gothic structure of black stone and glass, dark and silent against the stormy sky.
The family rushed out of the car, covering their heads as they ran up the steps. Julian drew a master keycard from his pocket—one he had stolen from his uncle's study years ago—and swiped it against the digital scanner. The scanner beeped green, and the heavy oak doors clicked open.
The interior of the mansion was vast and pitch black. The air was cold, smelling faintly of old paper, polished mahogany, and something else... something chemical.
"Where is the server room?" Richard asked, his voice echoing nervously through the cavernous foyer.
"In the basement levels, past the private library," Julian whispered, pulling out his phone to use the flashlight. "Follow me. Keep your voices down."
They moved like thieves through the house they had hoped to inherit. Chloe clutched Julian’s arm, her eyes darting to the portraits of Vance ancestors lining the walls. In the dim light of their phones, the painted eyes seemed to follow them, judging them.
They descended a winding spiral staircase into the subterranean levels of the estate. The temperature dropped significantly. Finally, they reached a heavy, reinforced steel door with a digital keypad and a biometric hand scanner.
"This is it," Julian said, his breath fogging in the cold air. He inserted the silver flash drive into a port beside the keypad. He began typing furiously on his phone, syncing the cryptographic keys.
The digital screen on the door flashed: OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED. INPUT BIOMETRIC OR SECURE MASTER CODE.
"Come on, come on..." Julian muttered, his fingers flying across his phone. He bypassed the first two security firewalls. The screen turned yellow: STAGE 2 OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. FINAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
"Julian, hurry!" Chloe gasped, looking back up the dark stairs. "I think I heard something upstairs."
"It’s just the storm, Chloe! Shut up and let me work!" Julian shouted, sweat dripping down his forehead despite the freezing air.
He pressed the final execution command on his phone. The steel door hissed, the heavy bolts sliding back with a loud, metallic thud. The door swung open, revealing a small, high-tech room filled with humming server racks glowing with blue and green LED lights. In the center of the room sat a sleek, black glass desk with a single monitor.
Julian rushed to the monitor, his fingers hitting the keyboard. "I'm in the main frame. I see the offshore accounts. Caymans, Zurich, Singapore... there’s over three hundred million dollars sitting here."
"Transfer it!" Beatrice cried out, her face twisted with avarice. "Transfer sixty million to our account in Panama! Do it now!"
Julian began inputting the routing numbers. The screen showed a loading bar: TRANSFER IN PROGRESS... 10%... 20%...
Suddenly, the humming of the servers stopped.
The blue and green lights turned a violent, flashing crimson.
The screen froze at 45%.
A single line of text appeared on the monitor: AUTHORIZATION DENIED BY PRIMARY ACCOUNT HOLDER. BACKUP PROTOCOL 'JUDAS' ACTIVATED.
"What? No! No, no, no!" Julian slammed his hands onto the desk. "It’s a glitch! It can't be denied! The override was perfect!"
Suddenly, the heavy steel door behind them slammed shut with tremendous force. The sound echoed like a gunshot. The automatic locks engaged.
They were trapped.
The overhead lights in the server room snapped on, blinding them for a moment. When their eyes adjusted, they saw that the glass wall facing the server racks was actually a two-way mirror. On the other side of the glass, a light turned on.
Sitting in a comfortable leather armchair, sipping a cup of hot tea, was Evelyn Vance. She was no longer wearing the waitress uniform. She was dressed in a tailored navy-blue suit, her silver hair perfectly coiffed. Beside her stood Arthur Pendelton and two men in dark suits with federal badges pinned to their lapels.
"Good evening, Julian. Good evening, Montgomerys," Evelyn’s voice came through a hidden speaker in the ceiling, calm, crystal clear, and utterly devastating.
"Aunt Evelyn!" Julian screamed, rushing to the glass and pounding on it. "Let us out! Please! It was a mistake! We were just... we were just trying to secure what we were owed!"
"What you are owed?" Evelyn said, setting her teacup down with a gentle click. "You owed me your loyalty, Julian. You owed me your integrity. Instead, you brought a family of vultures into my home to rob me."
Richard Montgomery stepped forward, his face grey with terror. "Madam Vance, please! My daughter had nothing to do with this! It was all Julian’s plan! He convinced us to come here!"
"Dad! What are you saying?" Chloe shrieked.
"It’s true!" Richard yelled, turning on Julian. "He’s the one who had the drive! He’s the one who broke the security! We were just following him!"
Evelyn watched the family turn on each other through the glass, her expression one of profound pity and disgust. "Look at you all. Snarling at each other like rats in a cage. The men beside me are Special Agents from the Federal Financial Crimes Division. The moment you entered those cryptographic keys, you executed a cyber-heist on a federally protected banking institution."
Beatrice fell to her knees, weeping openly now. "Evelyn, please... we will leave. We will leave the country, we will never see Julian again, just don't send us to prison!"
"It is too late for pleas, Beatrice," Evelyn said, standing up from her chair. "The transfer you attempted didn't send money to Panama. Protocol 'Judas' rerouted your connection. You just transferred sixty million dollars of your own family's remaining assets into a liquidation fund to pay off your debts to my company. You are officially bankrupt. And you are officially under arrest."
Evelyn turned her back on the glass as the federal agents moved toward the door control to apprehend the family.
May you like
But as she walked out, Julian screamed one last thing that made her freeze.
"You think you’ve won, Evelyn?!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with madness. "You think you’re the only one with secrets? Check the vault in the master bedroom! Check what your late husband really did before he died! You don't know the truth about Vance Global!"
