Chapter 4 - THE SAFE HOUSEThe rain was coming down in sheets as Ethan’s heavily armored black Ford Raptor tore down the winding mountain roads outside Ashborne.

Ethan drove with one hand on the wheel, his chest tightly wrapped in tactical bandages beneath his leather jacket. Reese sat in the passenger seat, her eyes sweeping the dark mirrors, while Eli slept fitfully in the back row, wrapped in a warm blanket.
Thirty minutes later, the truck pulled up to a hidden compound buried deep within the pine forests of Blackwood Ridge.
The estate was surrounded by a ten-foot electrified fence, high-definition security cameras, and automated perimeter sensors.
"Welcome to the Fortress," Ethan said, turning off the engine.
Knox and three other heavily armed men stepped out from the covered porch, guiding them quickly inside.
The interior of the safe house was warm and rugged—a mixture of stone fireplaces, exposed timber beams, and state-of-the-art tactical command monitors.
Reese carried a sleepy Eli upstairs to a cozy bedroom, tucking him under a heavy quilt.
"Thank you, Reese," Eli whispered, his eyes heavy with sleep. "For believing me."
"Always, little guy," Reese smiled, gently smoothing his hair back. "Get some sleep. Your dad and I are right downstairs."
When Reese walked back down to the main living area, she found Ethan sitting at a wide oak table, his shirt unbuttoned, trying to clean a fresh seep of blood from his surgical stitches.
"Sit still," Reese ordered softly, stepping over and taking the antiseptic wipes from his hand.
Ethan looked up, watching her quietly as she pulled up a chair beside him. Her gentle, practiced hands carefully cleaned the wound, applying fresh sterile gauze.
"You're very good at this," Ethan murmured, his dark eyes searching her face.
"I've spent five years in the trauma unit," Reese replied, her voice dropping as she felt the intense physical proximity between them. She was inches from his broad chest, feeling the steady, powerful thud of his heart beneath her fingertips. "I'm used to fixing broken men."
"I'm not easy to fix, Reese," Ethan whispered, reaching up to gently touch her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes. "My wife was killed by a car bomb four years ago. I built a wall around my heart so high no one could get close."
"Ethan..."
"But tonight," Ethan continued, his thumb lightly brushing across her lower lip, "when you stood in front of that needle to protect my son... you tore that wall down."

Reese’s breath caught in her throat. Before she could say a word, Knox rushed into the room, his face pale.
"Captain! You need to see this!" Knox yelled, pointing at the main security monitor.
