Chapter 5 - THE MOLEOn the main monitor, a live news broadcast was playing:
BREAKING NEWS: ASHBORNE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL ATTACK POLICE ISSUE ARREST WARRANT FOR REESE CALLAWAY SUSPECTED OF ABDUCTING SIX-YEAR-OLD ELI WARD AND AIDED FUGITIVE ETHAN WARD.
Reese stared at the television screen in total shock. Her picture—her professional hospital badge photo—was displayed in giant bold letters across the screen.
"They... they're calling me a kidnapper?" Reese gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "The police think I abducted Eli?!"
"The Fenris Syndicate owns Chief Reynolds of the Ashborne Police Department," Ethan growled, his jaw clenching in fury. "They're using the law to hunt us down in the open."
"Captain!" Knox shouted, staring at the perimeter grid monitor. "Sensors just triggered on the south ridge! Someone bypassed our outer alarm codes!"
BOOM!
A flashbang grenade shattered the front floor-to-ceiling glass windows!
Blinding white light and deafening sound filled the living room!
BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!
Mercenaries dressed in dark grey tactical armor flooded through the shattered windows, firing suppressed assault rifles!
"AMBUSH!" Knox yelled, returning fire as he ducked behind the heavy stone fireplace!
Ethan grabbed Reese, pulling her down behind the reinforced oak kitchen island just as a hail of bullets ripped through the wood above their heads!
"How did they find this place?!" Reese screamed over the deafening gunfire! "Only your team knows about the Fortress!"
