Chapter 2 - The Secret of the Lost Night

The heavy oak doors of the study shut, locking out the whispering remnants of the party. The room smelled of old leather, expensive scotch, and mahogany. Adrian paced the floor, his mind a chaotic storm, while Rosa sat on the velvet sofa, holding Mia tightly against her chest. The little girl had finally fallen asleep, exhausted from crying, her small hand still clutching her bunny.

Adrian stopped pacing and stared at Rosa. "Four years ago," he said, his voice tight with suppressed emotion. "The night of the charity gala in Geneva. I was targeted. I was drugged by my competitors. I barely escaped the hotel. I woke up the next morning in a safe house, but my memory of those twelve hours was completely blank. The doctors said it was a severe reaction to the sedative."

Rosa kept her head down, her fingers gently stroking Mia’s back. "It wasn't a safe house, Adrian. It was my apartment. I was working as a junior translator for the Swiss embassy back then. I found you collapsed in the alleyway. You were burning up, delirious, and paranoid. You wouldn't let me call an ambulance. You kept saying they would find you."

Adrian closed his eyes, trying to force his mind to unlock the door to that night. "You took care of me."

"I did," Rosa whispered. "But you weren't just delirious. You were... desperate. Vulnerable. We..." She paused, her cheeks flushing. "It only happened once, Adrian. The next morning, before I woke up, your family’s security team tracked you down. They dragged you out, and your father’s men warned me to never speak of that night. They paid off my embassy contract, blacklisted me from translating, and threatened my family. I had to take a housekeeping job just to survive."

"Why didn't you tell me when you came to work here two years ago?" Adrian demanded, stepping closer. "Why didn't you tell me about Mia?"

"Because your father was still alive!" Rosa cried out, her voice cracking as she tried not to wake the sleeping child. "He threatened to make me and my baby disappear if I ever approached you. He told me you were engaged to Vanessa to save the Hastings shipping empire. I only took the maid job here because I was desperate, and I wanted Mia to at least be near her father, even if you never knew. I never wanted to disrupt your life, Adrian."

Adrian’s chest heaved. The anger he felt toward his late father was a physical weight, but it was nothing compared to the sudden, overwhelming surge of protective instinct he felt for the little girl sleeping on his couch.

"She has my eyes, Rosa," Adrian said, his voice thick with emotion. "She has the Hastings eyes."

"I know," Rosa said softly. "I tried so hard to keep her hidden from you. But tonight... Vanessa saw her."

Before Adrian could answer, his phone buzzed again. He pulled it out, expecting another threatening text. Instead, it was his head of security, Marcus.

"Sir, we have a situation," Marcus said, his voice urgent over the speaker. "Vanessa Cole’s father, Arthur Cole, just called an emergency board meeting of Hastings Enterprises for tomorrow morning. They are moving to seize control of your shares, citing 'instability' and 'breach of contract' due to the broken engagement. And Adrian... there's something else. Vanessa didn't go home."

Adrian’s jaw clenched. "Where is she?"

"She went straight to the media," Marcus replied. "She’s spinning a story that you physically assaulted her at the party, and that you are keeping an illegal immigrant's child hostage in your house. The paparazzi are already gathering at your gates."

Adrian looked at Rosa, whose eyes widened in sheer terror.

"They are going to destroy us, aren't they?" Rosa whispered, clutching Mia tighter.

"No," Adrian said, his eyes turning to cold steel. "They are going to try. But they don't know who they are dealing with."

He walked over to the desk, picked up a landline phone, and dialed a number he hadn't called in years. "Get the jet ready," Adrian ordered. "We are leaving for Switzerland tonight. And Marcus? I want a DNA test kit brought to the tarmac. We are going to prove Mia is my daughter, and then I am going to burn the Cole family to the ground."

Chapter Hook: As they prepare to slip out of the mansion’s back entrance, the power suddenly cuts out. The entire estate is plunged into absolute darkness. From the hallway, the heavy sound of footsteps echoes—and the distinct, terrifying click of a handgun being loaded.
