Chapter 6 - The Broken Crown

Two weeks had passed since the dramatic showdown in the boardroom. The Cole empire was in ruins, its assets frozen, and Arthur Cole was locked away in a maximum-security prison awaiting trial.

Adrian had moved Rosa and Mia to his most secure estate—a breathtaking villa perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, California. The property was heavily guarded, surrounded by high cliffs and state-of-the-art security systems.

Here, away from the prying eyes of the media and the toxic high-society of New York, they had begun to heal.

Mia’s hair had grown slightly, the uneven patch Vanessa had cut now styled into a beautiful, soft frame around her face. She spent her days running through the villa's sunlit gardens, laughing and playing with her stuffed rabbit, Bunny, who had been carefully repaired with new, golden stitches.

Adrian and Rosa had grown closer than ever. The artificial boundaries of master and servant had vanished, replaced by a deep, mature love that had been forged in fire. They sat on the terrace, watching the sunset paint the sky in shades of gold and violet.

"I never thought I could feel this safe," Rosa said softly, leaning her head against Adrian’s shoulder.

"You are safe, Rosa. I promise you," Adrian murmured, kissing the top of her head. "The security is absolute. Vanessa is a fugitive, but she has no resources left. She can't reach us here."

Inside the villa, Mia was playing in the living room under the watchful eye of a nanny.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the kitchen.

Adrian’s instincts flared. He stood up instantly, pulling his firearm from his holster. "Rosa, stay here."

He moved quietly into the villa, his heart hammering. He found the nanny unconscious on the kitchen floor.

Panic seized him. He rushed back to the living room.

The room was empty. Mia was gone.

On the glass coffee table, written in red lipstick, was a single message: “The Cliffs. 5 Minutes. Come alone, or she dies.”

Adrian ran out of the villa toward the rugged cliffs overlooking the churning ocean below. Rosa followed him, screaming Mia’s name despite his warnings.

At the edge of the cliff, where the wind howled and the waves crashed violently against the rocks, stood Vanessa. Her white designer suit was dirty, her hair wild and tangled, her eyes filled with the madness of a woman who had lost everything.

She was holding Mia over the sheer drop.

"Vanessa! Stop!" Adrian yelled, halting thirty feet away, his gun raised but trembling. "Let her go! It’s over. Your father is in jail. You have nowhere to run."

"I don't want to run, Adrian!" Vanessa shrieked over the roar of the wind. "I wanted to be the queen of this empire! I wanted you! But you chose her! You chose this filthy maid and her bastard!"

"She is my daughter, Vanessa!" Adrian pleaded, his voice breaking. "Take me instead. Kill me, but let her go."

"No!" Vanessa laughed hysterically. "Killing you is too easy. I want you to watch her fall. I want you to live every day of your life knowing you couldn't save her!"

Rosa fell to her knees, crying hysterically. "Please, Vanessa! Take my life! I’ll jump! Just give me my baby!"

Mia was crying, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly. "Daddy! Mommy! Help!"

Adrian looked at Mia’s silver eyes. In that moment of absolute terror, Adrian saw something else in his daughter’s eyes. Not just fear—but the Hastings defiance.

Mia suddenly bit Vanessa’s arm with all her might.

Vanessa screamed in pain and instinctively let go of Mia.

At that exact second, Adrian lunged forward. He didn't shoot—the risk of hitting Mia was too high. He threw his body across the rocky ground, catching Mia’s hand just as she slipped over the edge of the cliff.

"I’ve got you!" Adrian roared, his muscles straining as he pulled Mia up and threw her into Rosa’s waiting arms.

But Vanessa, losing her balance from the bite, slipped on the wet grass at the cliff’s edge. She reached out, her hands clawing desperately at the air.

She looked up at Adrian, her eyes wide with sudden, terrifying clarity.

"Adrian, save me!" she screamed.

Adrian reached out his hand, but the wet earth gave way. Vanessa fell backward, disappearing into the dark, churning ocean below.

The silence that followed was broken only by the sound of the crashing waves.

EpilogueOne year later.

The Hastings mansion in New York had been sold, the money donated to a foundation supporting victims of corporate abuse and human trafficking.

In its place, Adrian and Rosa had built a quiet life in California. They were married in a small, private ceremony on the beach, attended only by those who truly cared for them.

On a bright summer morning, Adrian stood in the garden of their California home. Mia, now four years old, was running through the wildflowers, her hair fully grown back into a sea of beautiful, dark curls that bounced as she ran. Her striking silver eyes shone with pure joy.

Rosa walked up behind Adrian, wrapping her arms around his waist.

"She looks beautiful," Rosa whispered.

May you like

"She does," Adrian agreed, turning to kiss his wife. "She looks like a Hastings. But she has your heart, Rosa."

Mia ran up to them, holding a small flower she had picked, laughing as she threw it into the air. The dark past was gone, buried under the waves. Ahead of them lay a future they had fought for, won, and would protect forever.
