Chapter 3 - The Falling Mask

"Stay behind me," Adrian whispered, his hand instantly finding Rosa’s arm in the pitch-black room.
The silence of the mansion was now menacing. Outside, the security lights should have kicked on automatically, but they remained dead. Someone had cut the main power grid and bypassed the backup generators. This wasn't a protest from the Coles; this was a targeted hit.
"Adrian, I'm scared," Rosa whimpered, holding Mia so tightly the toddler began to stir.
"Shh. I've got you," Adrian murmured. He reached into his desk drawer, pulling out a sleek black semi-automatic pistol. He unlocked the safety with a quiet click.
He knew the mansion’s layout better than anyone. He guided Rosa through a concealed wood-paneled door behind the bookshelf—a secret passage built by his grandfather during the Cold War. They slipped into the narrow, dusty corridor just as the study’s main door was kicked open with a deafening crash.
Through the slats of the hidden door, Adrian saw three men in tactical gear, their faces covered in black balaclavas. They held suppressed pistols, their red laser sights sweeping across the empty room.
"They're gone," one of the men muttered into a radio. "Check the grounds. The boss wants the kid dead. Make it look like an accident during a break-in."
Rosa gasped, clapping her hand over her own mouth to stifle the sound. Adrian’s heart cold-hardened. Vanessa. She didn't just want to ruin him; she wanted to erase the evidence of his true heir.
Adrian guided Rosa down the stairs of the hidden passage, leading them directly to the underground garage where his armored SUV sat. Within minutes, they were speeding through the secret estate tunnel that exited a mile away from the main gates, leaving the paparazzi and the assassins behind.
Two hours later, they were inside Adrian’s private jet, soaring thirty thousand feet above the Atlantic, heading toward a secure estate in the Swiss Alps.
A private medical courier on board had already drawn Adrian's and Mia's blood. Now, they waited.
Adrian sat across from Rosa, watching Mia, who was happily coloring on a notepad, seemingly forgotten of the danger they had just escaped.
"I'm sorry, Rosa," Adrian said quietly. "My family's world is a cage of gold and blood. You and Mia should never have been dragged into it."
"We were already in it, Adrian," Rosa said, looking out the window at the sea of stars. "From the moment I saved you in Geneva, our fates were locked. But I don't regret it. Not for a second. Because of that night, I have Mia."
Adrian reached across the table and placed his hand over hers. For the first time in years, the coldness in his chest began to melt. "I will protect her, Rosa. And I will protect you. I swear it."
The cabin door opened, and Marcus, his head of security, stepped in holding a tablet. His face was grim.
"The DNA results are in, sir," Marcus said.
Adrian took the tablet. His eyes scanned the document.
Probability of Paternity: 99.99%
Adrian let out a breath he felt he’d been holding for four years. He looked at Mia, his daughter. A sense of fierce pride and absolute determination washed over him.
"But there's more, Adrian," Marcus said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "We intercepted a encrypted transmission from Arthur Cole's server. They aren't just trying to take over Hastings Enterprises. They are blackmailing your board members with something big. They have a file called 'Project Genesis.' It contains medical records of your father... and your mother."
Adrian frowned. "My mother died in a car crash when I was ten. What does she have to do with this?"
May you like
"According to these files," Marcus said, "the car crash wasn't an accident. And the man who paid the truck driver to ram her car... was Arthur Cole."
Chapter Hook: Adrian's grip on the tablet tightened until the screen cracked. At that moment, the jet’s satellite phone rang. It was Arthur Cole himself. When Adrian answered, Arthur’s voice was smooth as silk: "Congratulations on the DNA results, Adrian. But if you ever want to see your daughter reach her fourth birthday, you will sign over your voting shares to me by morning. Or should I tell the world how your mother really died?"
