Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Meridian Empire

Forty-eight hours after Claire’s recovery, the corporate and financial world of Atlanta experienced an earthquake of historic proportions.

Sitting behind the massive mahogany desk in my penthouse office at Sloane Infrastructure Group, I watched live financial news broadcasts flash across three wall-mounted monitors.

“Breaking News: Federal agents have raided the corporate headquarters of Meridian Corporation following unsealed indictments linking executive leadership to illegal biological weapons development and corporate terrorism…”

“Shares of Meridian stock have plummeted 94% in pre-market trading following the arrest of CEO Thomas Vale and his son, Julian Vance…”

“Multimillion-dollar federal infrastructure contracts are being rapidly reassigned to Sloane Infrastructure Group, solidifying Mason Sloane’s undisputed dominance over the southeastern economic market…”

The heavy oak door to my office swung open, and Marcus walked in, dropping a thick leather-bound dossier onto my desk.

“The federal prosecutor just called,” Marcus said, a rare grin breaking across his stoic face. “Thomas Vale tried to flee to the Bahamas this morning using a private jet, but federal marshals intercepted him on the tarmac. He’s looking at a minimum of thirty years in federal prison without parole. And Vanessa Vale has been formally charged with conspiracy to commit murder and corporate espionage.”

I leaned back in my leather executive chair, looking out the floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the sprawling Atlanta skyline—a city I had studied, built, and eventually conquered.

“And the Meridian board?” I asked calmly.

“Scrambling to save their own skins,” Marcus replied. “They’re offering to sell off their remaining real estate assets for pennies on the dollar just to avoid federal audits.”

“Buy them,” I said without hesitation. “Take over their downtown commercial towers, convert their bio-research labs into public community health centers, and make sure every asset bearing the Vale name is rebranded under the Sloane Foundation.”

“Consider it done, Boss,” Marcus nodded, turning toward the door.

As Marcus stepped out, my phone buzzed on the desk.

It was a video call from St. Catherine’s Medical Center.

I swiped the screen instantly. Claire’s face filled the display, glowing with health and radiant happiness, holding three small bundles wrapped in pink and white blankets against her chest.

“Hey, billionaire,” Claire smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners as three tiny, healthy cries echoed softly through the speakers. “When are you coming back to the hospital? Your daughters are starting to wonder if their father is ever going to show up to change their first diapers.”

I stood up from my desk, buttoning the front of my charcoal suit jacket with a renewed sense of purpose and peace.

“Tell them,” I said, walking toward the private elevator that would take me down to my car, “that their father is on his way, and nothing in this world will ever keep me away from my family again.”
