Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Cradle

One month later, the Sloane estate in Buckhead was bathed in the warm, golden light of an autumn Sunday afternoon.

The sprawling stone mansion, surrounded by manicured lawns and towering oak trees, hummed with the gentle, joyous chaos of three healthy newborn babies. Nurses, family friends, and trusted security personnel moved quietly through the sunlit corridors, ensuring that our sanctuary remained impenetrable.

I stood on the second-floor balcony, holding a warm cup of coffee while watching the autumn leaves drift across the stone courtyard below.

Even though Julian Vance and Thomas Vale were locked away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, the instincts forged on the south side of Atlanta never truly sleep. A predator who spends a lifetime climbing to the top learns that security is never a destination—it’s an ongoing discipline.

The heavy oak doors of the master nursery opened softly behind me, and light footsteps approached across the hardwood floor.

Two warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a familiar chin rested gently against my shoulder.

“You’re brooding again,” Claire’s voice was soft, carrying the sweet, comforting melody that had anchored my soul through every storm of my life.

I turned around in her embrace, wrapping my arms around her waist and pulling her close against my chest, breathing in the scent of lavender and baby powder in her hair.

“I’m not brooding,” I smiled, kissing the top of her head. “I’m just calculating load-bearing tolerances.”

Claire laughed, looking up at me with those warm brown eyes that still made me feel like the kid with the coffee-stained papers outside the library.

“You don’t have to protect us every second of every day, Mason. The storm has passed. The Vales are gone. We won.”

“We did,” I agreed, looking back toward the nursery where three tiny cribs sat side by side, filled with peaceful, sleeping angels who would grow up knowing a world of limitless possibility. “And I’d tear down the world a thousand times over to keep it that way.”
