Chapter 1 - THE ER RECEPTION DESK EXPLOSIONThe siren of the ambulance wailed like a dying animal tearing through the damp, smog-heavy evening air of Naucalpan. Inside the claustrophobic metal box, the smell of antiseptic clashed with the metallic tang of cold sweat. Andrés sat hunched on the narrow bench next to the stretcher, his knuckles pressed so hard against his mouth that the skin turned chalk-white.

He stared at Jimena. Her face was the color of unbaked dough, her lips cracked and bleeding where she had bitten them during the agonizing eternity it took for the police and paramedics to arrive.
"Jimena... open your eyes, please. Look at me," Andrés choked out, his voice cracking with a terrifying mix of guilt and sheer, unadulterated panic.
She didn't move. Her right hand remained clawed protectively over her five-month rounded belly, as if shielding her unborn child from the very world that had betrayed them both.
When the ambulance slammed to a halt outside the county hospital emergency entrance, chaos erupted instantly.
"We need a trauma team, obstetric emergency! Five months pregnant, abdominal trauma, possible placental abruption!" the paramedic shouted, leaping out of the back doors before the vehicle had even fully settled in park.
Wheelchairs scraped, nurses ran with clipboards flying, and bright, sterile fluorescent lights beat down on them like an interrogation room. Andrés sprang up to follow the gurney, but a heavy hand blocked his chest.
"Sir, stay behind the yellow line. Family wait in the lobby," a burly triage nurse snapped, her eyes sharp and devoid of patience.
"I am her husband! That's my wife, my baby!" Andrés roared, lunging forward, his veins bulging at his temples.
Before he could push past, the automatic sliding doors parted with a mechanical hiss, and a whirlwind of synthetic fury swept into the waiting room.
"Andrés! Andrés Eduardo Salgado, don't you dare make a scene in a public hospital!"
Ofelia marched in, her face twisted in theatrical anguish, clutching a cheap faux-leather purse against her chest like a shield. Right behind her slouched Bruno, wearing his greasy zip-up hoodie, chewing gum with a lazy, defiant smirk that didn't reach his shifty, terrified eyes.
"Mom? What the hell are you doing here? You should be in handcuffs!" Andrés spun around, his eyes blazing with a feral, murderous intensity that Ofelia had never seen in her compliant, obedient firstborn.
"Handcuffs?" Ofelia gasped, clapping a trembling, heavily ringed hand over her chest in an Oscar-worthy performance of betrayal. "Is that how you talk to your mother after everything I sacrificed? That ungrateful little parasite locked herself in the tool shed just to ruin your life, and you call the police on your own flesh and blood?!"
"Shut up! Just shut your lying mouth!" Andrés exploded, stepping up to his mother with his fists clenched so tight his fingernails bit deep into his palms. "I saw the lock, Mom! I saw the yellow dress! You and Bruno locked her in the dark while she was pregnant! You could have killed them both!"
A crowd of nurses, patients, and security guards turned their heads, whispering and pointing at the blazing family drama unfolding in the middle of the trauma ward.
Bruno stepped forward, trying to puff out his chest, though his voice shook slightly. "Hey, watch it, bro. It was just a joke—a little discipline because she was acting crazy, throwing plates and disrespecting Mom. She's the one who slipped in the yard! We didn't do anything!"
"A joke?" Andrés grabbed Bruno by the collar of his hoodie with such raw, explosive force that the younger brother choked, his sneakers sliding across the polished linoleum. "You locked her in a room with rusty nails, chemicals, and freezing concrete while she was carrying my child! If my baby dies... I swear to God, Bruno, I will kill you with my bare hands right here on this floor!"
"Code Blue in ER hallway! Security to triage immediately!" squawked the hospital PA system.
Two massive security guards descended on Andrés, wrenching his arms back and breaking his grip on Bruno. Bruno stumbled backward, coughing, fixing his hood, and shooting a venomous glare at his brother while whispering loud enough for everyone to hear:

"You're choosing a stranger over your own family. Mom was right. You're pathetic."
Andrés thrashed against the guards, tears of pure rage burning hot down his cheeks as he watched his mother and brother turn their backs and march toward the exit, completely unbothered by the medical nightmare unfolding behind the doors.
