Chapter 7 - The Ghost in the System

One year after the trial, life had rebuilt itself from the ashes.
I was living in a quiet coastal city three hundred miles away, running my own software security firm, Vanguard Systems. The house in Elmhurst had been sold at market value, and every penny of the proceeds had been placed into a fund supporting survivors of domestic violence.
Elaine and Dennis were forced into a small, rented one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of their old town, living off minimal state pensions after their assets were completely liquidated by the IRS and the trust restitution judgments. Grant was languishing in maximum security, serving his twenty-five-year sentence.
Everything was settled. The nightmare was finally over.
Or so I thought.
On a rainy Thursday evening, while working late in my home office, my laptop screen suddenly flickered. A dark red terminal window forced itself over my coding environment, overriding the system permissions.
My heart hammered against my ribs. I immediately reached for my network disconnect switch, but before I could flip it, text began printing rapidly across the screen.
> SYSTEM OVERRIDE INITIATED > USER IDENTIFIED: ELENA STERLING > ENCRYPTED INCOMING TRANSMISSION...
I stared at the screen, my fingers trembling over the keyboard. "Who is this?" I typed into the terminal.
The response was instantaneous:
> DID YOU REALLY THINK I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNEW ABOUT THE SERVERS, ELENA?
My blood ran cold. The wording... it wasn't Grant. Grant was tech-illiterate; he didn't know how to write a basic command-line script, let alone breach an encrypted VPN.
> GRANT WAS A FOOL. A BLUNT INSTRUMENT. HE WAS SO OBSESSED WITH POWER THAT HE NEVER REALIZED WHO WAS ACTUALLY RUNNING STERLING CONSTRUCTION.
The terminal window minimized, revealing a high-resolution live video feed.
My breath caught in my throat. The camera was pointed at the interior of a darkened bedroom—my current bedroom. I saw my own bed, my own nightstand, and the window overlooking the rain-slicked street outside.

> YOU THOUGHT YOU PLAYED US, ELENA, the text scrolled across the screen. YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE THE MASTERMIND. BUT DENNIS WASN'T JUST TURNING UP THE TV THAT NIGHT TO IGNORE YOUR SCREAMS.
> HE WAS TRANSMITTING THE ARCHIVES.
