Chapter 3 - THE WOLF IN THE SURGICAL SUITE

The air in the room instantly turned to ice. My hand hovered over the burner phone on the bedside table, my fingers trembling as if I had just touched a live wire.

"Richard?" Daniel stepped in front of me, his body rigid, his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists. "What are you doing here? You told us you were in Zurich! And what the hell do you mean by your code?"

Richard Sterling chuckled, a low, smooth sound that sent a shiver straight down my spine. He unbuttoned his expensive trench coat, revealing a tailored charcoal suit underneath. He looked less like a medical doctor and more like an executioner attending a board meeting.

"Zurich was a convenient alibi, my dear boy," Richard said, walking leisurely toward the window, ignoring the torrential rain lashing against the glass. "Medical conferences are so wonderfully dull anyway. Much more productive to stay local, manage high-yield offshore accounts, and orchestrate the most elaborate insurance fraud in the history of this hospital."

"You did this," I whispered, venom dripping from every syllable as I stepped out from behind Daniel. "You used my sister. You gave her a terminal, unoperatable tumor just to use her as a puppet?"

Richard’s eyebrows arched in mock offense, a theatrical expression of disbelief.

"Now, now, Sarah, let’s get our facts straight," Richard replied smoothly, turning to face us. "I didn't give Emily anything. Your sister had a rare, aggressive neuroendocrine mutation years ago. She was drowning in medical debt, desperate, and entirely alone in the world. I simply offered her a mutually beneficial arrangement."

"Mutually beneficial?" Daniel roared, lunging forward, but Richard didn't even flinch.

"Listen to me, Daniel," Richard commanded, his voice suddenly dropping its pleasant facade, replaced by a chilling, razor-sharp authority. "If you make a single sound about this to hospital administration or the police, Emily’s chart won't just list a ruptured tumor. It will list an accidental drug overdose administered by her own obstetrician brother-in-law."

I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth. "You're framing Daniel?"

"Of course I am," Richard smiled, sliding a pristine white document out of his inner jacket pocket and tossing it onto the hospital bed. "That is a forged prescription ledger bearing Daniel's signature, ordering high-dose anticoagulants that directly accelerated Emily's hemorrhage. All it takes is one anonymous tip to the medical board, and Daniel’s career, his license, and his freedom vanish into thin air."

I looked down at the paper. The signature was a terrifyingly accurate forgery of Daniel’s handwriting.

"You bastard," Daniel whispered, his voice shaking with helpless rage. "Emily is in intensive care right now, fighting for her life, and you're treating her like a disposable pawn!"

"Emily knew the risks," Richard said coldly, checking his gold wristwatch. "She wanted the payout as much as I did. Five million dollars in tax-free insurance fraud, funneled through the St. Jude Research Trust—a trust, I might add, that I control entirely. But there’s just one tiny loose end."

He slowly raised his gaze from his watch, locking his cold eyes directly onto mine.

"The burner phone contains a complete, unedited ledger of every transaction, every encrypted chat, and every offshore routing number," Richard said softly. "And right now, Sarah is holding it."

"You want the phone," I said, my grip tightening around the device until my knuckles turned white.

"I don't just want the phone, Sarah," Richard smiled, taking a slow step forward as his hand slipped inside his jacket, revealing the dull metallic gleam of a silenced automatic pistol. "I need you to hand it over, and then, unfortunately, both of you are going to take a very permanent, very tragic drive off the coastal highway."
