Chapter 5 - THE SAFE HOUSE IN THE WOODS

The SUV limped along the winding coastal highway, the shredded rubber of the rear tire flapping violently against the wheel well like a wounded animal. Sparks flew into the dark night every time Daniel took a sharp turn.
"We can't go home," Daniel said, his knuckles white as he wrestled with the vibrating steering wheel. "Richard knows our address, he knows our security codes, and the local police are likely already compromised by his network on the hospital board."
"Then where do we go?" I asked, wiping the rain and sweat from my face, clutching the burner phone tightly in my jacket pocket like a lifeline.
"My grandfather’s old cabin," Daniel replied, steering the car off the main paved highway onto a hidden, overgrown logging trail buried deep inside the pine forest. "It's off the grid. No cell service, no electricity, and completely untraceable. If Richard has tracking software linked to our toll passes or credit cards, we ditch the car right now."
A mile down the dark, muddy trail, Daniel killed the headlights and steered the SUV off the road into a dense thicket of pine trees, concealing it completely from view.
We stepped out into the freezing downpour, the towering pines swaying violently in the gale-force winds. The cabin was a rustic, weather-beaten structure nestled against the cliffside overlooking the roaring ocean far below.
Daniel unlocked the heavy wooden door with an old iron key hidden under the porch beam, and we hurried inside, locking it securely behind us. Pitch-black darkness enveloped us until Daniel found an emergency flashlight and clicked it on. The beam cut through the dusty air, revealing a simple stone fireplace, a plaid sofa, and a heavy oak desk.
"We're safe here for tonight," Daniel exhaled, collapsing onto the edge of the sofa.
"We're not safe anywhere, Daniel," I said, pacing the wooden floorboards as I pulled the burner phone out of my pocket. "Richard has five million dollars, an international network of shell companies, and enough power to make us vanish without a trace. Turning this phone over to the local authorities is a dead end if they're on his payroll."
"Then we don't go to the local authorities," Daniel said, his eyes catching the amber glow of the flashlight. "We use the phone ourselves. We crack open his entire financial network right here, right now, and broadcast it to every federal regulatory agency before he even realizes where we've gone."
"Can you do that?" I asked, staring at him in astonishment.
"I have the encrypted login credentials we found in the chat logs," Daniel said, sitting down at the heavy oak desk and sliding the burner phone onto the wood. "Richard was arrogant. He used the same administrative password for his offshore accounts that he used for the St. Jude Research Trust server."
He tapped the screen, entering the master sequence. A loading bar appeared, crawling slowly across the small OLED display.
Accessing Secure Server: Zurich Financial Node 4... Decrypting files... 12%... 45%... 89%... Access Granted.
A massive directory of folders materialized on the screen. Tax evasion records, forged medical licensing bribes, offshore bank statements totaling over forty million dollars, and... a dedicated folder labeled [Project Phantom - Emily Vance].
Daniel tapped the folder, and a high-definition video file immediately began to play.
My breath caught in my throat. The video showed Emily sitting in a sterile, white-walled medical laboratory, talking directly to the camera, looking healthier than she had in months.
"If you're watching this," Emily’s recorded voice echoed softly through the quiet cabin, "it means the tumor has ruptured, and Richard has made his move. Everything I did... the fake pregnancy, the baby shower, the lies... I did it because Richard threatened to kill Sarah if I backed out of the financial transfer."
I stumbled backward, tears finally breaking free and spilling down my cheeks. "Emily..."
"He engineered the tumor using a localized gene therapy trial gone wrong three years ago," Emily’s video confession continued. "He owns me. But I left a backdoor in his primary server. The encryption key isn't just on this phone... it's wired directly to the live broadcast feed of the hospital's central board meeting happening tomorrow morning at eight o'clock."
Daniel’s eyes widened. "She planned to expose him all along. The baby shower was a trap for Richard, not for us."
Suddenly, the heavy oak front door of the cabin exploded inward with a deafening crash of splintered wood.

A flashlight beam cut through the darkness, blinding us.
"Well, well, well," Richard’s smooth, terrifying voice echoed from the doorway as he stepped into the cabin, leveling his pistol straight at our heads. "Family reunions are such wonderfully messy affairs."
