Chapter 6 - THE FINAL BROADCAST

The cold night air rushed through the shattered doorway of the cabin, carrying the scent of pine and impending doom.

Richard stepped further into the room, his clothes soaked, his dark hair plastered to his forehead, but his grip on the silenced pistol was unnervingly steady. He looked around the rustic interior with mild amusement, as if inspecting a quaint hotel room.

"I must hand it to you, Daniel," Richard said, smiling coldly. "Finding this old relic of a cabin actually took a bit of effort. But tracking the unique cellular ping of that burner phone? Child’s play."

I stepped instinctively in front of the oak desk, shielding the burner phone with my body. "You're too late, Richard," I said, my voice shaking with a fierce defiance. "Emily’s video confession has already uploaded to the St. Jude central server. By eight o'clock tomorrow morning, every federal investigator in the country will have your entire financial empire."

Richard didn't flinch. In fact, a slow, mocking smile spread across his face.

"Sarah, sweet, naive Sarah," Richard chuckled softly, taking another slow step forward. "Do you really think a brilliant surgeon like me would leave a vulnerable backdoor open on my own private network? That video file you just watched? It was routed through a local loopback address. It never left this room."

My heart plummeted into my stomach. I turned to look at Daniel. His face had gone completely pale.

"He's right," Daniel whispered, staring at the screen of the burner phone. "The upload progress bar... it was a simulation. It was hard-coded into the device to trick us."

"Bingo," Richard said, raising the barrel of the gun slightly so it was aimed squarely between my eyes. "And now, the final act. I have to admit, it's a tragedy about the cabin catching fire due to a faulty old wood stove. Tragic accidents happen all the time in the wilderness."

He slowly squeezed his finger against the trigger.

Click.

The heavy oak desk suddenly slammed upward with earth-shattering force, catching Richard off guard and sending his shot flying harmlessly into the wooden ceiling beams.

"Now, Sarah! Run!" Daniel roared, tackling Richard around the waist with the fury of a cornered animal.

The two men crashed violently to the floorboards, wrestling over the pistol. I didn't hesitate. I grabbed the heavy iron poker from the stone fireplace hearth, turned around, and swung it with all my might across Richard’s shoulder.

Richard let out a sharp cry of pain, his grip on the pistol loosening. Daniel wrenched the weapon out of his hand, scrambling backward across the floor, pointing the barrel straight at Richard’s chest.

"Don't move, Richard! One more twitch and I swear to God I'll pull the trigger!" Daniel panted, blood dripping from a cut above his eye.

Richard lay on the floor, clutching his injured shoulder, coughing violently. But instead of looking terrified, a strange, twisted grin crept onto his lips.

"You can shoot me, Daniel," Richard wheezed, laughing darkly. "You can kill me right here in the dirt. But it won't stop what’s already in motion. The wire transfers cleared five minutes ago. The funds are gone. I've won."

Before Daniel could respond, the wail of police sirens suddenly cut through the howling wind outside. Not just one siren—a dozen. Red and blue strobe lights began flashing brilliantly through the shattered doorway, painting the cabin walls in violent hues.

Heavy boots crunched on the gravel outside, followed by a booming voice through a loudspeaker:

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and step away from the building with your hands visible!"

Richard’s smile vanished instantly. He stared at the doorway in utter shock. "No... that's impossible. The federal marshals aren't scheduled to audit the trust until next month."

The front door was kicked off its remaining hinges as a tactical team in full gear swarmed into the cabin, their assault rifles raised, lasers painting the room in red dots.

A tall woman in a crisp federal investigator's suit stepped through the center of the tactical unit, her badge gleaming under the flashing lights. She looked down at Richard on the floor, then turned her gaze to Daniel and me.

"Dr. Richard Sterling," the lead investigator said coldly, snapping a pair of handcuffs onto his wrists. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, conspiracy to commit murder, and medical fraud."

Richard was hauled roughly to his feet, glaring furiously around the room. "Who tipped you off? How did you know?"

A familiar, weak voice echoed from the doorway behind the tactical team.

"Because I gave them the master key, Richard."
