Chapter 18 - The Office Confrontation

At precisely 9:00 AM, the glass double doors of Julian Vance’s corporate headquarters on the top floor of the Vance Tower swung open.

We didn't wait for an appointment. Special Agent Vance flashed his federal badge at the front receptionist, and the three of us strode purposefully past the rows of terrified executive assistants straight toward Julian’s expansive corner office.

James pushed the heavy mahogany doors wide open. Julian Vance was sitting behind his massive glass desk, sipping espresso, looking entirely relaxed as he checked his gold wristwatch.

"I expected you at my legal team's office by now, James," Julian smiled smoothly, not even looking up. "Did you bring the signed relinquishment papers?"

"We brought something much better, Julian," I said, stepping into the room with Maya cradled securely in my arms.

Julian finally looked up, his polite smile faltering slightly as he saw Special Agent Vance stepping forward behind us with a thick manila folder in his hand.

"Agent Vance," Julian said, his voice dropping its warm veneer, turning sharp and cold. "To what do I owe this... uninvited intrusion?"

"Julian Vance, you are under federal arrest for corporate racketeering, financial extortion, and the unlawful suppression of witness testimony," Agent Vance announced clearly, stepping forward and placing a pair of heavy steel cuffs directly onto the glass desk.

Julian stood up slowly, his face flushing with a sudden, dark fury. He laughed—a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the high glass walls. "You have no jurisdiction here, Agent. I have signed contracts, legal custody filings signed by family court magistrates, and enough political capital to bury this ridiculous stunt before lunch."

"You might have bought the local judges, Julian," a calm, familiar voice spoke from the doorway behind us.

We all turned. Stepping out of the private elevator lobby was a tall, distinguished-looking man in an immaculate judicial robe—Judge Henderson himself, accompanied by two federal marshals.

Julian’s face finally lost all color. The untouchable billionaire staggered back against his glass desk, staring at the judge in sheer disbelief.

"Judge Henderson? What are you... how did you..." Julian stammered, his polished composure completely shattering.

"I was presented with a dead-man's switch containing undeniable proof that you coerced local magistrates and forged municipal documents to manipulate family custody statutes," Judge Henderson said coldly, stepping into the room. "Your financial empire is being liquidated by federal order as we speak, Julian. Your reign over this city is officially over."

Before Julian could utter another word, Special Agent Vance stepped forward, grabbing his arm and snapping the heavy steel cuffs firmly around his wrists.

As Julian was dragged away toward the elevators, screaming curses and threats that no one in the room bothered to listen to, I looked down at Maya.

She let out a soft, contented sigh, her tiny chest rising and falling peacefully against my heart. The monster in the shadows was gone for good.
