Chapter 3 - The Stranger in Administration

The linoleum floor of the administrative wing felt like ice beneath my bare feet. I was still wearing the grease-stained kitchen shirt, a horrific, surreal badge of the normal life I had inhabited just two hours ago. James walked a half-step behind me, silent, his face drained of all color.

We were ushered into a cramped, windowless conference room where a stern-looking social worker named Mrs. Gable sat behind a metal desk, flanked by a man I had never seen before in my life.

He stood up as we entered. He was tall, sharply dressed in an expensive charcoal suit that reeked of dry cleaning and old money, with slicked-back dark hair and cold, calculating eyes that immediately locked onto the infant carrier I was clutching like a shield.

"Mr. and Mrs. Vance," the man said, his voice smooth, devoid of any genuine warmth. "I am Marcus Thorne. And I believe congratulations are in order, though under terribly tragic circumstances."

I stopped dead in my tracks. The name hit me with the force of a physical blow. Marcus Thorne. It was a name Elena had mentioned once, months ago, right before she cut ties with the family—a name she spat out like poison, describing a man who stalked her, a man she was hiding from.

"You have no business here," James growled, stepping in front of me, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles turned white. "Get out of this hospital before I throw you out myself."

"Ah, Mr. Vance. The devoted brother-in-law and secret financier," Marcus smiled, a thin, humorless stretching of his lips that didn't reach his eyes. He pulled a thick manila folder from his briefcase and slapped it onto Mrs. Gable’s desk. "I'm afraid I have every right to be here. Legally speaking, I am the biological father of the child Elena carried. And under the terms of our pre-existing legal arrangements, any offspring resulting from her pregnancy remains under my sole custody purview in the event of her incapacitation or death."

Mrs. Gable adjusted her glasses, sliding the legal documents toward herself while looking apologetically between James and me. "Mr. Thorne has presented notarized documentation establishing biological paternity and a binding surrogacy contract signed by Elena herself six months ago. Furthermore, because your names, Mr. and Mrs. Vance, do not appear anywhere on the hospital's initial birth registry or state adoption filings, you currently have zero legal standing to retain custody of this child."

The room tilted once more. I looked down at the tiny baby sleeping peacefully against my chest, completely oblivious to the war being waged over her cradle.

"She lied to us," I whispered, the horror dawning with sickening clarity. "Elena didn't just use James to give us a baby. She used James to shield this child from him."

Marcus stepped closer, his expensive cologne filling the tiny room. He leaned down, his face inches from mine, his voice dropping to a chilling, predatory hiss. "Elena was running away from me, Mrs. Vance. But blood always wins in the end. Hand over my daughter, or I promise you, I will drag every single one of you through a custody battle that will tear your little suburban family completely apart."
