Chapter 20 - The Forever Family

Ten years later, the nursery looks a little different.

The crib and the changing table are long gone, replaced by a twin bed with a floral quilt, a desk covered in colored pencils and sketch pads, and a bookshelf overflowing with adventure novels and fairy tales.

It’s a rainy Saturday afternoon, and the house is filled with the kind of wonderful, chaotic noise that only a family of six can produce.

Leo, now nineteen and home on break from college, is arguing loudly with Liam and Noah in the kitchen about who ate the last slice of pizza.

And sitting at the kitchen island, wearing a bright pink sweater and sketching pictures of horses in a thick notebook, is ten-year-old Maya.

She has Elena’s dark, expressive eyes, James’s stubborn determination, and a fierce, joyful spirit that lights up every room she enters. She doesn't know the full, cinematic horror of the dark secrets, the billionaire blackmail, or the hospital corridors where she was born—not yet. She only knows she is loved, protected, and fiercely cherished by a family that fought heaven and hell to keep her.

I sat at the kitchen table, sipping a cup of warm coffee, while James walked up behind me and dropped a soft kiss onto the top of my head.

He slid into the empty chair beside me, wrapping his hand around mine just like he had done on the worst days of our lives.

"Penny for your thoughts," James smiled softly, nodding toward Maya as she proudly held up a drawing of our entire family standing together under a bright, sunny sky.

I looked at my three tall boys laughing in the kitchen, at Maya beaming proudly with her colored pencils, and at the man who had risked everything to make my impossible dream a reality.

"I was just thinking," I whispered, leaning my head against his shoulder with a deep, unbreakable peace settling into my chest, "that we finally got our daughter."

James smiled, tightening his grip around my hand as the rain tapped softly against the windowpane. "And she got the best family in the world."
