Chapter 4 - The Midnight Ultimatum

We were forced out of the administrative office empty-handed. Well, almost.

Because Marcus Thorne lacked immediate emergency guardianship sign-offs and Mrs. Gable managed to buy us a temporary twenty-four-hour stay pending a formal family court hearing the next morning, they allowed us to take Maya home for one night. Just one night under our roof, before the law decided whether she belonged to the suburban family who loved her in theory, or the dangerous stranger who claimed her by blood.

The drive home was suffocating. None of us spoke.

When we pulled into the driveway of our suburban home, the house was dark except for the amber glow of the porch light. Inside, our three boys were fast asleep upstairs—nine, seven, and four. Their shoes were scattered by the mudroom door; a half-eaten sleeve of crackers lay abandoned on the kitchen counter. Evidence of a normal life that had officially ceased to exist.

I carried Maya into the nursery—the very room James and I had painted light blue twelve years ago, the room where the box of newborn clothes still sat gathering dust in the garage.

James stood awkwardly in the doorway, staring at the floorboards.

"You lied to me," I said quietly, rocking the baby gently against my chest as I sat down in the old wooden rocking chair. "Every single detail, James. You let me believe it was a miracle. You let me believe Elena came to you out of the goodness of her heart to fulfill a dream. You didn't tell me about Marcus."

"I didn't know about Marcus until two months ago," James choked out, his voice breaking as he finally sank to his knees beside my chair, burying his face in my lap. "God help me, Sarah, I swear to you I didn't know. Elena came to me crying, begging for help, saying a dangerous man was trying to trap her, that she wanted to carry a child safely away from him. She said she wanted to give the baby to us because she trusted us. She made me swear on my life not to dig into her past. I just wanted to protect her... and I wanted to give you the family we always mourned."

I looked down at the crown of Maya's dark hair. The weight of his deception was staggering, yet as I traced the soft curve of her cheek, a fierce, primal instinct ignited deep within my chest.

"He's going to take her, isn't he?" I whispered. "Marcus has the papers. He has the biological claim."

"Not if we fight," James said, looking up, his eyes burning with a desperate, terrifying resolve. "I've been on the phone with a criminal defense attorney I know from college. There's a way. But it's risky. It involves opening up things about Elena's past that the police are still investigating."

Before I could ask what he meant, my phone buzzed violently on the side table. It was an unknown number flashing across the screen.

I picked it up and pressed accept.

"Mrs. Vance," a smooth, synthesized voice murmured through the speaker. "I hope you're enjoying your last night with my daughter. Because if you don't sign over the voluntary relinquishment forms by 8:00 AM tomorrow, I won't just take the baby. I'll make sure the police find out exactly how your husband funded an illegal black-market adoption using embezzled funds from his architectural firm."

The line clicked dead.

I looked slowly down at James. The color had drained entirely from his face. "What did he mean by embezzled funds?"
