Chapter 10 - The Ultimate CheckmateThe door pushed open, and a shabby, broken man stepped into the office.

It wasn't Malcolm—he was currently sitting in a federal penitentiary in upstate New York, facing two decades behind bars. It was Ryan Brooks, Malcolm’s former attorney, who had managed to avoid prison time by cooperating with federal prosecutors, though he had been disbarred, bankrupted, and blacklisted from the legal profession.

Ryan looked exhausted, his expensive suits replaced by a cheap, off-the-rack jacket that hung loosely on his frame. He wouldn't meet Elena’s eyes as he walked across the immaculate hardwood floor.

“Elena,” Ryan muttered, his voice trembling as he gripped the back of the visitor's chair. “I... I need help.”

Elena didn't invite him to sit down. She simply leaned back in her leather chair, her arms folded across her chest, watching him with absolute detachment.

“Help, Ryan?” she asked softly. “From me?”

“I have nothing,” Ryan pleaded, his voice breaking. “Malcolm blamed me for everything at the trial. My license is gone. My bank accounts are seized. I can't even rent an apartment in the city. You... you hold all the remaining trusts. If you could just sign off on a small release—”

Elena interrupted him with a single, calm gesture of her hand.

She opened the top drawer of her desk, pulled out a thick manila envelope identical to the one Malcolm had received on Christmas morning, and slid it across the glass surface.

Ryan stared at the envelope, his breath catching in his throat. He slowly reached out, his trembling fingers pulling out the single sheet of paper inside.

It wasn't a financial release. It was a court order prohibiting him from ever practicing law or acting as a corporate consultant in the state of New York, backed by a permanent injunction secured by Corwin Forensic Recovery.

At the bottom of the page, written in clean, elegant handwriting, was a single sentence:

I hope the view from the bottom was worth the price of your integrity.

Ryan dropped the paper as if it had burned his skin. He looked up, terror written across his face. “You... you’re destroying everyone connected to him.”

Elena stood up slowly, walking around her desk until she stood tall and proud in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the glass walls.

“No, Ryan,” Elena said, her voice ringing with absolute finality. “I am not destroying anyone. I am simply balancing the books.”

She turned her back to him, looking out over the magnificent New York skyline that stretched out endlessly before her. The war was over. The kingdom was hers. And she would never, ever be invisible again.
