Chapter 8 - The AftermathThree weeks later, the snow outside had melted into a cold, steady winter rain.

The front-page headlines of the Wall Street Journal blared a massive financial scandal: VANCE MERRITT PARTNERS COLLAPSES; FOUNDER FACES 20 YEARS FOR FRAUD. Accompanying the article was a humiliating photograph of Malcolm Vance in handcuffs, flanked by federal marshals.

On social media, Sophia Thorne’s accounts had completely vanished. Her followers had turned on her overnight, leaving thousands of comments mocking her sudden fall from grace and the freezing of her luxury assets.

At 44 Blackwood Ridge, the new owners—a quiet family from upstate—were busy remodeling the interior, painting over the rooms where Malcolm had once plotted his betrayals.

And in Manhattan, on the thirty-second floor of the glass tower, Elena Corwin stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city skyline.

Her phone buzzed on the table. It was Silas.

“The asset liquidation is complete,” Silas said over the line. “Every cent recovered from Project Apex has been legally returned to the defrauded investors and the Corwin Family Trust. Your hands are completely clean.”

“Thank you, Silas,” Elena said softly.

“What’s next, Elena? You’ve just dismantled one of the most corrupt financial rings in New York. The business world is watching you.”

Elena looked down at her reflection in the glass. She didn't see the quiet, overlooked housewife she used to be. She saw a survivor, a strategist, a force of nature.

“I’m just getting started,” she said.
