Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the PastThe sterile, humming fluorescent lights of the NICU buzzed softly, casting a pale, clinical glow over the rows of high-tech incubators. Twelve hours had melted away like wax, yet Sebastian Moretti hadn’t shifted an inch.

To the rest of the city, he was a ghost who walked in tailored suits and cast long shadows over the underworld, a titan whispered about in quiet, terrified tones across dark boardrooms and dimly lit alleyways. But here, trapped within the quiet desperation of a hospital corner, he was just a man held hostage by the ghost of a memory.

I stood frozen beside the nurses' station, the lukewarm cardboard cup of coffee growing cold in my hand. My mind raced back to the fleeting glimpse of that faded plastic hospital bracelet. Seventeen years old. Yellowed with age, cracked along the edges, but preserved like a sacred relic beneath the gold links of his expensive timepiece.

A newborn's band.

"You're staring, Nurse Evans," Sebastian said, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that barely disturbed the quiet rhythm of the heart monitor. He didn't look up from the fragile bundle resting against his chest. His thumb, heavily calloused and scarred from a life of violence, gently brushed the back of Baby Boy Miller’s translucent hand.

"I didn't mean to pry, Mr. Moretti," I replied, stepping closer, my professional instincts warring with a sudden, suffocating curiosity. "It’s just... that bracelet. That’s not a visitor's pass."

Sebastian finally raised his eyes. They were dark, storm-grey, and weighed down by a magnitude of grief that no federal indictment or rival gang could ever inflict upon him.

"Some things don't wash off," he murmured. "No matter how much power you buy, or how many enemies you bury. The ink on a hospital band fades, but the ghost it leaves behind stays carved into your skin forever."

Before I could press him further, the heavy double doors of the NICU burst open.

A sharp, hurried click of heels echoed down the linoleum floor. Dr. Harrison, the hospital's stern chief of pediatrics, strode toward us with a look of absolute panic, trailed closely by two uniformed city police officers and a frantic-looking hospital administrator.

"Mr. Moretti!" Dr. Harrison stammered, his face pale. "You need to put the child down immediately. Security has been alerted—wait, why hasn't security removed him yet?"

The two police officers instinctively reached for the holsters at their hips, their eyes darting nervously between the city’s most notorious man and the fragile infant resting against his heart.

Sebastian didn't flinch. He didn't even stand up. He simply tightened his arm around Baby Boy Miller, shielding the newborn's face with his broad shoulder, and gave Dr. Harrison a cold, razor-sharp look that made the pediatrician take an involuntary step backward.

"If any of you so much as raise your voice and wake this child," Sebastian whispered, his voice dropping an octave into a chilling, absolute stillness, "I will ensure this hospital becomes a historical footnote by morning. Now, back off."
