Chapter 14 - The Zurich Connection

The encrypted financial trace led straight to a high-frequency trading firm registered in Zurich under the innocuous name Veritas Capital Management.

Inside a secured conference room at Fort Liberty, Dana, Marcus, and a federal cyber-crimes investigator named Agent Miller stared at a glowing holographic projector displaying an intricate web of offshore accounts, shell companies, and real estate acquisitions spanning three continents.

“This isn't just local racketeering,” Agent Miller said, tapping a stylus against the projection screen. “Veritas Capital is a front for an international syndicate that specializes in hostile takeovers, corporate blackmail, and asset laundering. Robert Carrington wasn't the master; he was regional management.”

Marcus crossed his arms, his jaw tightening. “And they’re tied to my sister’s disappearance? And the threats against Sophie?”

“Directly,” Miller nodded. “Clara Vance didn’t just stumble onto local zoning fraud. She uncovered a money-laundering pipeline funneling illicit capital into domestic political campaigns. That’s why they eliminated her—and why they’re coming back for Sophie now that she’s heading a high-profile public foundation.”

Dana leaned over the table, studying the organizational chart. One name stood out at the very top, masked behind a triple-encrypted firewall: The Director.

“How do we draw them out?” Dana asked calmly.

Miller looked at her skeptically. “Colonel, these people operate above national jurisdictions. If we try to subpoena Veritas Capital directly, they’ll erase their digital footprint before we finish the paperwork. We need bait.”

Dana stood up slowly, straightening her jacket.

“Then we give them what they want,” Dana said.

“What do you mean?” Sophie asked from the doorway, having walked in quietly just in time to hear her mother’s words.

Dana turned to look at her daughter, her eyes filled with a fierce, protective resolve. “We announce a multi-million-dollar expansion of the Vance Foundation, funded by ‘unclaimed foreign assets’ recovered from the Carrington seizure.”

“Mom, that’s suicide,” Sophie protested, stepping into the room. “They’ll come after the foundation directly!”

“Let them,” Dana said. “Because the moment they try to hack our accounts or intercept the transfer, Marcus and Agent Miller will trace their exact physical location through the handshake protocol.”

Marcus looked at Dana, a slow, grim smile spreading across his face. “A counter-siege.”

“Exactly,” Dana said. “They want a war? We’ll give them a battlefield of our choosing.”
