Chapter 15 - The Bait

Two weeks later, the press release went live across national financial wires: VANCE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES TEN-MILLION-DOLLAR GLOBAL EXPANSION BACKED BY RECOVERED ASSETS.
Within twenty-four hours, the digital tripwires set by Agent Miller and Marcus began to blink red on the secure monitors inside Dana’s home office.
“We have incoming traffic,” Marcus whispered, his fingers flying across his keyboard as data streams cascaded down the monitors. “Sophisticated routing... bouncing from Zurich to the Cayman Islands, then straight into our local secure server.”
“They’re taking the bait,” Agent Miller muttered, watching a secondary tracking screen. “They’re trying to inject a backdoor trojan to freeze the foundation’s operational funds.”
Sophie sat beside Marcus, monitoring the firewall integrity with the precision of an expert architect protecting a blueprint. “Firewall holds... routing the backdoor into our sandbox environment now.”
“Got them,” Marcus grinned fiercely. “Physical coordinates locked. The primary server ping is originating from a private penthouse suite in downtown Charlotte—The Grand Meridian.”
Dana checked her watch. 10:14 PM.
“Miller, coordinate with the federal field office in Charlotte. Have a tactical containment unit surround the Meridian immediately,” Dana ordered, grabbing her tactical jacket from the chair.
“Colonel, you’re retired,” Miller reminded her. “You can’t lead a tactical raid on a civilian hotel.”
Dana turned, her eyes flashing with the unyielding authority of a veteran commander.

“I’m a mother protecting her family,” Dana said coldly. “And I don’t need a badge to finish a mission.”
She walked out the door, leaving Miller and Marcus scrambling to keep up.
