Chapter 16 - The Subterranean War

The safety glass shattered with a deafening roar. Alarm sirens began to howl throughout the compound, drowning out the red emergency lights that pulsed across the ceiling.
Dr. Vance shrieked, diving behind a metal prep table as glass rained down around him. William didn't flinch. He slowly turned around, his cold gray-blue eyes fixing on me as I stepped through the ruined doorway, my weapon raised.

"You always were emotional, Ryan," William said smoothly, holding the glass container between two fingers. "Just like your mother. You see a family; I see the future of medicine."
"You're a sick old man who belongs in a cell next to Evelyn," I said, stepping closer. "Hand over the data drives and step away from the workbench."
Before I could reach him, heavy footsteps echoed from the hall. Two armed guards burst into the lab. I dropped to one knee, firing twice into the chest of the lead guard. The second guard returned fire, a bullet grazing my shoulder and throwing me backward against a stainless steel sink.
Pain burned across my collarbone, but I scrambled forward, grabbing the fallen guard's weapon and sweeping the legs of the second operative as he lunged at me.

When I looked up, William was gone.
The rear exit of the lab was swinging open, leading toward a subterranean boat dock connected to the lake. I shoved myself up from the floor, blood dripping down my arm, and pursued him into the damp, dark tunnel.
