Chapter 17 - An Unholy Alliance

The boat dock opened directly onto the black water of Lake Geneva. A high-speed dark blue launch was idling at the edge of the slip.
William was stepping onto the stern when I burst through the tunnel doors. "Stop!"
He turned, holding a remote detonator in his left hand. "If you take another step, Ryan, the charges installed beneath the floor of your home in Chicago will detonate. I have a team sitting outside your suburban house right now."
My blood ran cold. "You wouldn't."
"Try me," William sneered. "Drop the gun."
I lowered my weapon slowly, my heart tearing itself apart. I had left Grace and the children under local police surveillance, but if William had compromised the local force, they stood no chance.
Suddenly, a heavy black sedan crashed through the wooden double doors of the boat house above us. The vehicle slammed into the dock's support beams, sending splinters and debris raining into the water.
The driver's side door swung open. A woman stepped out into the floodlights, wearing a wool coat and carrying a tactical shotgun.
It was Evelyn.
She racked the shotgun slide with a deafening metallic clack. "He's bluffing, Ryan! I had federal marshals sweep your house twenty minutes ago! His men are already in custody!"

William's face twisted into an expression of pure rage. "Evelyn? How did you get out?"
"I made a deal with the United States Attorney," Evelyn said, her voice echoing over the water like thunder. "I traded my entire fortune and my freedom to crush you."
