Chapter 7 - The Ghost of William Nolan

The surgical waiting room was dead silent save for the rhythmic ticking of a wall clock. It was 3:14 AM. Inside Operating Room 3, a team of six doctors was opening my three-year-old son’s chest. Outside, my entire reality was continuing to collapse around me.

“My father died when I was twelve,” I said to the empty air, staring at the paper in my hands. “I went to his funeral. I buried him in the family plot in Lake Forest.”

“Ryan,” Grace said softly, sitting beside me on the plastic chairs, holding a paper cup of water she hadn't touched. “Is it possible... could the records be wrong?”

“My mother never makes mistakes with paper,” I replied, my voice hollow. “If William Nolan’s genetic profile was updated six months ago, it means the man in that grave in Lake Forest isn't my father. It means Evelyn lied about his death, just like she lied about my children.”

Before I could process the nightmare further, the elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed.

A tall man in his late sixties stepped out into the dim lighting. He wore a simple wool coat over a worn sweater. He had thick gray hair, a heavy jawline, and eyes that were the exact same shade of gray-blue as mine—and Noah’s.

He held a wooden cane in his right hand, leaning on it heavily as he walked toward us.

Grace stood up instinctively, stepping in front of the girls who were asleep on the couch behind us. I stood up slowly, the blood draining completely from my face.

The man stopped ten feet away. He looked at me, his eyes brimming with tears that he didn’t bother to wipe away.

“You look just like your grandfather, Ryan,” the man said. His voice was deep, raspy, and carried an unmistakable tremor.

“Who are you?” I demanded, though deep down, my soul already knew the answer.

“I’m William,” the man said softly. “Your mother paid off the coroner thirty years ago to fake my death after I tried to take you and leave her. She had me committed to a private psychiatric facility in upstate New York under a false name. I spent two decades locked away until a team of federal investigators uncovered the facility last year.”

He took a shaky breath, leaning harder on his cane.

“I came as soon as I heard what she did to Grace and the children,” William continued. “Evelyn isn't just a controlling woman, Ryan. She is the head of a syndicate that uses our family’s wealth to traffic in lives, leverage, and silence. And if we don't stop her tonight, she will take those three children from you forever.”
